Arrows
were looking to join Luminy Wolves at the
top of Group D on 6 points as they entertained
Pechakali. They
got off to the worst possible start and quickly
found themselves 3-0 down against their Spanish
opponents. A game of two halves is an often used
cliché in football but one that was absolutely
perfect to describe this game. The change of ends
lead to a change of fortunes and suited Arrows
much more than Pechakali as Arrows embarked on
a remarkable comeback. Two goals from John Gillham
and a second in as many games for Jim McNama brought
the teams level at 3-3. The scoring ended there
and each team took a valuable point.
Going
into the final round of games Kings
Old Boys knew their fate would lie in the
Plate competition. Pechakali
could still conceivably make the Cup with
a win, an Arrows defeat and a 3-goal swing in
goal difference. This scenario did not look too
likely though as Kings Old Boys forged ahead through
Martyn Kent . A win for Kings Old Boys would mean
3 rd in the group and a, theoretically, easier
tie in the Plate quarter-finals. With a one goal
advantage they pressed home in the second half
and took all 3 points with a 3-1 victory as Michael
Diprose and Adam Edwards scored their first goals
in the tournament. The defeat consigned Pechakali
to 4 th place.
With
news filtering through from Pitch C in the other
game – Arrows and
Luminy Wolves knew
they were both safely through to the Cup but this
was no dead rubber. Pride was at stake not to
mention the honour of winning the group. For Luminy
Wolves there was the added incentive of maintaining
their 100% winning record. The first half would
yield no goals but in the second half one man
would change the course of the game. That man
was Allan Gossellin who scored a hat-trick that
would give Luminy Wolves a 3-0 win. The goals
took his Barca Fives tally to 6 and with a great
chance of being the tournament's top goalscorer.
The
result confirmed Luminy Wolves would win Group
D on 9 points and despite defeat Arrows could
console themselves that they had secured a Cup
quarter-final berth.
