With
3 previous winners and the 2008 Plate winners
taking their place in the quarter-finals we were
bound to have an ultra competitive Cup competition.
If you add in Galacticos and Luminy Wolves who
qualified with 100% records you would do well
to pick a winner out of this line-up.
First
up on Pitch A was Galacticos
versus defending champions Rapid
Bosco Navas. The opening goal of this game
would dictate the whole flow of the match. Yaaseen
Patel scored his 8 th goal of the tournament and
with a 1-0 lead Galacticos then dictated the pace
of the game. They slowed the game up and took
the heat out of Rapid's game. Defending stoutly
but without panic they repelled all the Spanish
could throw at them. As the game continued Rapid
Bosco Navas threw more and more at Galacticos
with greater and greater urgency but to no avail.
Galacticos superbly closed out the game and ensured
the Barca Fives would have a new winner in 2009.
Commiserations to Rapid Bosco Navas who once again
played the tournament in a fantastic spirit once
again and congratulations to Galacticos who march
on.
Goldsmith
Williams were a team on a mission in this
tournament. Having won the 2008 Prague Masters
and narrowly finishing runners-up in the same
tournament in July 2009 they were determined to
get back to winning ways. Arrows
who ran into Luminy Wolves in the last game would
have another amazingly difficult task to progress
in this game. Goldsmith Williams established a
2-0 lead at the break and from there did not look
back. They were ruthless as they bombarded the
Arrows goal and in the end completed a 7-0 win.
Liam Currie scored two to put him on 8 for the
tournament alongside Yaaseen Patel. John Lowry
scored four to bring his total for the day and
up to 6. Chris Williams bagged the remaining goal
to put him on 4 for the tournament. Arrows must
have wondered what hit them but they showed enough
on the day that they could progress beyond the
quarter-finals in future tournaments.
The
3rd quarter-final would no doubt be a quiet and
sleepy affair as it featured Lozenetz
City against FC
Radbroke. The Bulgarian team always creates
an amazing atmosphere for their games with their
army of supporters, flags and airhorns. FC Radbroke
would not only have to win on the pitch but handle
the pressure of the occasion and sideline influences.
Having just won 10-1 Lozenetz City had just hit
form and were flying. You have to give FC Radbroke
a lot of credit for matching their opponents blow
for blow. As current Prague Masters champions
Lozenetz City have proved they can play football
and maybe that eurofootballfives.com experience
gave them the edge in this match to carry them
over the victory line. The game was decided by
the odd goal in five and it was the English side
that would be on the wrong end of the scoreline
despite a brace from Michael Brandon. A brace
for Lozenetz captain Alex Kyulev and a strike
from Bozhidar Gorchev sealed a 3-2 win. Close
but no cigar for FC Radbroke who proved they can
mix it at this level.
Lozenetz's
opponents in the semi-finals would be the winner
of the France versus Czech Republic encounter
as Luminy Wolves
played DHL Prague Red.
The cup represented a step up for DHL Prague Red
who took the Plate trophy 12 months ago. Luminy
Wolves would be a class above the teams in the
Plate back then and it would take a heroic effort
from the Czechs to win this. It was a heroic effort
we saw too as DHL stayed with the French team
and while they couldn't remain parity they only
trailed by the odd Hugues Blanc goal at the break.
DHL maintained their efforts in the second half
but the extra strength and power of Luminy Wolves
saw them home with a solid 3-0 victory. Mehdi
Yousfi's 5th goal of the tournament and Allan
Gossellin's 7th goal finished the job. We now
had a Bulgaria v France semi-final to look forward
to. DHL Prague Red could now relax with a few
beers and enjoy the rest of the day's action as
it unfolded with some cold refreshing beers.
