With
39 games done and dusted there was just one match
to go – the 2009 Amsterdam Fives final.
The
first of our two finalists were the Blazers
Army who had reached this stage with two
golden goal winners in the previous two rounds
showing they would be no pushovers in this contest.
They were bidding to be only the second team in
eurofootballfives.com history (16 tournaments
to date) to finish 3rd in their group and then
go on to lift the Cup trophy. Spain 's Rapid Bosco
Navas achieved this feat in the 2008 Barca Fives.
Their
opponents would be the Bull
Heads who were certainly the favourites
going into this game having beaten their final
opponents 4-0 in the Group C game this morning.
There would be pressure on the Bull Heads who
had it all to lose with the more experienced squad
against the Blazers Army who with an average age
of 17 were the youngest team to reach a final.
With such a young squad they were bound to have
the neutrals on their side.
The
Bull Heads handled the pressure and the occasion
superbly and got off to just the start they needed
through Jose Fernandes. The Blazers Army, arguably
the tournament's surprise package, were not to
be written off though and battled hard to stay
within striking distance of their opponents. They
made sure the Bull Head's did not have it all
their own way and kept the match competitive until
the end.
In
the second half, Jose Fernandes scored his second
goal of the final to all but seal the trophy for
the Bull Heads. When the referee blew the final
whistle on the days proceedings the result was
2-0.
Big
congratulations to our winners of the 2009 Amsterdam
Fives – Bull Heads.
The
top goalscorer prize
was also settled. Jose
Fernandes's two goals in the final had
usurped the days efforts of Bimmce Sekeyeke's
7 goals to put him top of the goalkeeping tree
with 8 in 6 matches.
Thank
you to everyone who participated in the tournament
and made it such a great day of competition. The
tournament was a great way to sign off our 2009
summer season – we can't wait for Autumn 2009
and Summer 2010.
We
look forward to seeing you all again very soon.
