Norton
Old Boys were back in action on the field of play
in Round 2. We mentioned briefly in Round 1 they
were an experienced side in our tournaments.
They
played their first eurofootballfives.com tournament
back in 2010 at the Barca Fives missing out on
the knock-out phase. 12 months later, in the 2011
Prague Masters, they picked up their first eurofootballfives
victory and qualified for the Plate before suffering
a narrow 2-1 defeat to Czech team Fridays. In
a very tough 2012 Mallorca Tournament Norton Old
Boys third eurofootballfives.com appearance was
a hugely successful one as they took an impressive
victory in the Plate competition. In the 2013
Algarve Open they won the Wooden Spoon Playoff.
2014 marked their debut at the Veterans Tournament
in Mallorca – a 6-1 victory over Son Veri Vets
was the highlight as they finished 4th in the
group. They went out of the Plate at the Semi-Final
stage to eventual winners Eagles 3:36.
Their
next opponents were Ashtead Vets who would finally
get underway. They had 3 points in the bank from
the walkover (the other teams would collect their
3 walkover points as we progressed).
Norton
Old Boys had started off with a defeat but against
a very tough opponent so we'd hope this hadn't
dented their confidence. It was our first glimpse
of Ashtead Vets on the field of play and there
was very little to choose between the teams. This
was evidenced in the score at half-time which
was 0-0. After the break we were to get the first
goals of the day for both teams. Martin Harrington
was on target for Ashtead Vets, Dave Thomas was
on target for Norton Old Boys. The game finished
1-1 and only time would tell if this was a point
gained or two points dropped.
In
the next game we had one team looking for their
first victory of the day in the shape of Old Bromleians.
They were up against Mini FC who were aiming to
make it two wins out of two and make a good early
case for Cup qualification.
In
their first game Old Bromleians had competed well
but found themselves a goal down at the break.
History was to repeat itself in Round 2 for them.
Binlo claimed his third goal in 1.5 games and
the Portuguese team were on their way again. Binlo
was also on his way – as a contender for the top
goalscorer award.
Mini
FC had scored a goal in each half to defeat Norton
Old Boy's last time out and they were the model
of consistency as they did so again here against
Old Bromleians. Paulo Aquino bagged his first
goal of the tournament and sealed the match 2-0.
It
was a respectable score for Old Bromleians against
a team who had reached the Cup Semi-Finals in
our Open Age tournament 12 months ago.
The
third fixture of the round was the now defunct
one that involved the no-show RT Algarve. This
time the beneficiaries were Belfast Space Monkeys
who moved on to 6 points to join Mini FC at the
top.
