Last
but not least, we come to Group C where the group
began with Drunken DisAudley FC making their debut
against Skidmarks – it would be a daunting start
to eurofootballfives.com life.
Skidmarks
were making their sixth appearance in eurofootballfives.com
competition and were one of the favourites. They
were looking to secure their 3rd eurofootballfives
title. On debut they claimed the 2011 Valencia
Fives title and followed this up with victory
in the 2012 Krakow Trophy. Only Olympic Phil Babb
and Athletico Do Hollande have had such a successful
introduction to eurofootballfives.com competition.
Olympic Phil Babb won their first 4 tournaments
(Amsterdam 2008, Algarve 2009, Prague 2010 and
Budapest 2011) and Athletico Do Hollande won here
at the Algarve Open in 2010 and 2011. Skidmarks
almost become only the second team to claim three
titles in a row when they reached the 2013 Mallorca
Fives Cup Final. French team Grant Thornton took
the title that day. In the 2014 Budapest Fives
they won their 6-team group and were looking on
fine form until they came up against Argentina
in the Quarter-Finals and lost 2-0. Skidmarks
were on course for more success at the 2014 Bratislava
Fives when they won Group A. Two close contests
in the Quarter-Finals and Semi-Finals (both on
penalties) saw them win through to the Cup Final.
They finished Runners-Up to CIS Committee of Belarus
who claimed their second title of the calendar
year.
This
was certainly going to be a touch opening test
for Drunken DisAudley but one that didn't seem
to faze them at all as a Harry Musson goal sent
them on their way to victory. They must have though
this eurofootballfives.com lark was easy!
Skidmarks
were amongst the pre-tournament favourites so
this was quite some scalp.
Match
2 in Group C saw Portugal's Algarve Star take
on England's Why Always Morris? Both teams were
on debut and had a blank canvas on which to paint
their footballing artistry.
Algarve
Stars were the hokey cokey team of the tournament.
First, they were in when they originally signed
up. Then, they were out as they were replaced
by Futeboladas in Group B. Then, they were back
in again as they replaced 11 Esperancas in Group
C. They would hope their results would not see
them crash out again.
It
was a pretty even contest in the opening period
as the two teams sounded each other out. Neither
could successfully find a way past their opposing
goalkeeper and so we changed ends with the scores
still level at 0-0.
The
goals flowed in the second period and we had four
to savour. It was the Algarve Stars who ended
the game the happier of the two teams as they
scored 3 of the goals through Viton Silva, Roberto
Silva and Paulo Aquino. Why Always Morris? scored
their first goal in eurofootballfives.com competition
through Paul Morris but it was to only be a consolation
on this occasion.
The
last two teams to get underway were Depo Originals
of Ireland versus AFC Shooters B. Both of these
teams had sister squads in the tournament so had
bountiful support from their colleagues on the
touchline.
Depo
Originals had seen their Depo Legends sunk 3-0
in their opening fixture in Group B so would hope
for a brighter start. AFC Shooters B had seen
their A team battle out a 1-1 draw against Lacey
Green in a game they could well have won. Could
the B team go one better and claim all 3 points?
AFC
Shooters arguably had the better of the game here
but it was a determined Depo Originals performance
and there was to be no score in the opening period
of play. The pattern continued in the second half
with stalemate in terms of the score but AFC Shooters
were looking the stronger as the game went on
and were having more of the attacking play.
Just
as it looked like the B team would join the A
team with an opening draw Oliver Gray popped up
to fire home the winning goal. There was little
time for Depo Originals to react and despite a
great effort they slipped to defeat. The goal
was just what the doctor ordered for AFC Shooters
B.
