The
2015 Algarve Open Wooden Spoon Final was the battle
for 17th position, a consolation prize and one
last game to enjoy on these team's Algarve tour.
The
game would be contested by Depo Originals of Ireland
and Whiteley FC of England. Depo Originals came
into the game as the 17th ranked team courtesy
of a better goal difference than their opponents.
Whiteley FC had already met one of the Depo teams
earlier today when they met Depo Legends in Group
B. On that occasion the Legends won 1-0. Could
Whiteley FC enact their revenge?
Whiteley
FC had already played in an Algarve Wooden Spoon
Final back in 2010. Five years ago they lost out
4-1 to Milton FC and so they had another reason
for wanting revenge here.
The
teams would have to summon up one last ounce of
effort to finish the day on a high, with a victory
and the coveted Wooden Spoon to take home.
It
was Depo Originals who drew first blood as they
took a first half lead through Sean O'Donnell.
Whiteley FC equalized in the second half through
Dan Froud's second goal of the tournament and
the game finished 1-1. We would have a penalty
shoot-out to decide who would be the victor.
There
was some cracking penalties taken and after the
regulation 3 penalties each we were tied at 3-3.
Sean O'Donnell, Keith Lynch and Mark Higgins all
successful for the Depo Originals. Dan Froud,
Mike Smith and Tom Howard all scored for Whiteley
FC. Two more successful penalties each (Dave Vaughan
and John Gray for Depo, Steven Holmes and Simon
Stones for Whiteley FC) made it 5-5. Depo were
back to their original starters as Sean O'Donnell
converted for a second time before the agony for
Whiteley goalkeeper Nick Poling who saw his spot-kick
saved. It was an epic shoot-out and Depo Originals
were victorious.
