Unusually, we began Round 5 with very little to be decided in terms of who would qualify for the Cup, who would qualify for the Plate and who would be eliminated from the tournament.

The two teams for the Cup had been decided on 12 points, so had the two teams for the Plate on 6 points and then we had the two teams who knew the next game would be their last in the 2016 Budapest Fives but could they go out with a bang and finish 5th rather than 6th .

Those two teams were Wandsworth Athletic and Two Balls One Touch. Both teams could consider themselves unlucky for being in a high quality group. Wandsworth Athletic had lost by the odd goals on three occasions whilst Two Balls One Touch who were well beaten in their first two games and been much improved in Round 3 and Round 4 and arguably only lost to a red card and a last minute penalty in those games.

Early on it was Two Balls One Touch who had the best opportunities with Thomas Holliday twice going close but on both occasions Wandsworth goalkeeper Matt Snelling made good saves to keep the scores at 0-0.

It was still 0-0 when the second half kicked off but it would not remain that way as Tim Rickard put Wandsworth Athletic 1-0 ahead. It was Holliday versus Snelling again not long after with Snelling winning the battle again but he was powerless to prevent Shad Sinha turning home the rebound for 1-1.

Wandsworth Athletic had a chance to win it towards the end but, sadly for them, James Cowley saw his shot go wide and we finished with honours even at 1-1. It was good for both teams to end on a point. Wandsworth Athletic finished in 5 th position courtesy of their superior goal difference. Thank you to both teams for attending – we hope you both enjoyed the tournament and the tour to Budapest.

Next up was the big one – Budapest Celtic Greens versus Meglepetes. It was a battle of the top two and at stake was the Group A title. Both teams had the luxury of a free hit at the group win as they were both assured of Cup qualification. Both teams came into the game with a 100% record but Meglepetes lead the way on goal difference and therefore a draw would see them win Group A.

Both teams went for victory as not only was the Group A title at stake but there was a chance of avoiding the Group B winners in the Cup Semi-Finals if they could finish higher than their opponents in the table. At half-time we were no closer to knowing who would win Group A as we reached the break at 0-0.

Meglepetes made their position a little more comfortable when they forged ahead in the second period thanks to a Marton Patik goal. The lead did not last too long though thanks to a Levente Kovacs strike which drew the teams level at 1-1. The two teams earned a share of the points.

The result meant Meglepetes had won Group A and finished the group phase as the joint top-scoring team. They were the top scoring team in the group phase in 2013 and 2014 and second in 2015. Watch Meglepetes if you want to see goals!

The final thing to wrap up Group A was Vilag Valogatott versus FC Broxelona A. As with the previous two fixtures in Round 5 we knew the teams who had qualified for the Cup/Plate and who had been eliminated but we just needed to sort out the final positions in each bracket. The two other games in Round 5 had ended 1-1, would we have a winner here?

FC Broxelona A were currently ahead in the table courtesy of a 0 goal difference compared to -2 for the Hungarian team. A draw would therefore see FC Broxelona A finish in 3rd position and qualify with a theoretically easier Plate Semi-Final tie against the 4th placed team in Group B. A win for either side would see that team finish in 3rd position.

Vilag Valogatott needed the 3 points more and it was going their way early on when Rutger Van Der Burgl bagged his second goal of the tournament. It was a goal that would divide the teams at half-time. It was also the goal that would divide the two teams at the final whistle.

The 1-0 victory for Vilag Valogatott meant the two teams finished with identical goal difference of 6 goals for and 7 against. This spread of goals had earned Vilag Valogatott 9 points compared to 6 for FC Broxelona A. The Hungarian team would finish third but both teams would advance to this afternoon's Plate competition.
