We
were into the final game of Group B and with The
A Team already assured of the Cup, these were
various permutations possible for the other 3
teams as GSF Drunkerz met The Dave Cole Minors.
GSF
Drunkerz victory or draw: Would see them reach
the Cup as Team Bear II and The Dave Cole Minors
would proceed to the Plate.
The
Dave Cole Minors victory: Would see both these
teams and Team Bear II all finish on 3 points.
It would therefore be down to goal difference
to decide who would go into the Cup and which
two would go into the Plate. Before kick-off the
teams were Team Bear II +2, GSF Drunkerz 0, The
Dave Cole Minors -9. It meant a Dave Cole Minors
victory would eliminate GSF Drunkerz at the expense
of Team Bear II unless the Dave Cole Minors could
win by 11 or more.
Team
Bear II watched on from the sidelines and they
would have enjoyed what they saw as The Dave Cole
Minors lead 3-1 at half-time. The stag Dave Cole
set them on their way with 2 more goals from Antonio
Vernaschi putting them in control. A Martin Volek
strike kept them in it though. Tom Sheppard's
goal made it 4-1 to The Dave Cole Minors after
the restart and they should've been out of sight.
GSF
Drunkerz came from behind to win at Team Bear
II and came back against The A Team (too little,
too late on that occasion). Perhaps we shouldn't
have written them off but they plugged away and
got it back to 4-2, then 4-3 and were back on
level terms at 4-4. Just when they got it back
all square The Dave Cole Minors wrestled back
the lead as Antonio Vernaschi completed a fine
hat-trick to put his team back in the lead at
5-4.
At
this stage Team Bear II were going through to
the Cup but at the death they slipped to 3rd place
in the table as GSF Drunkerz struck late to make
it 5-5 and earn a vital draw that would see them
finish in Group B. There was a hat-trick for Martin
Volek and a brace for Jan Okulier as in one fell
swoop the Slovakians left two English teams forlorn.
The
Dave Cole Minors must have wondered how they didn't
win the game. They would have to pick themselves
up for the afternoon knock-out phase.
