The 2014 Barcelona Fives was our 10th 5-a-side football tournament in this great city. It was our largest ever single tournament with a line-up of 26 teams set to do battle. There were 16 teams returning to eurofootballfives.com action and 10 making a debut on our circuit. There were 11 nations represented and for the first time we had all 5 “home” nations from the UK and Ireland participating.

We kicked off with ADP Netherlands versus England's Tinniedad and Tobacco with the latter on debut.

ADP Netherlands debuted themselves in eurofootballfives.com competition 12 months ago at the 2013 Barcelona Fives with two squads. The first team made an impact in the group phase by winning Group A whilst the second team struggled by finishing 5th in Group C. The ADP Netherlands first team then went out in the Cup Quarter-Finals on penalties to Sporting Gingham. They also boasted the tournament's top goalscorer as Jan Van Rabenswaiij finished with 7 for the tournament. They then appeared at the 2014 Amsterdam Fives finishing joint 2nd in Group C. The Cup Quarter-Finals tripped them up again as they went out 3-1 to Team Extreme. Can they go further in Barcelona this year?

It was the new boys who got off to a flyer as Jon McKinley put Tinniedad and Tobacco ahead. The English team looked on course for all three points until a stunning long-range strike from Michel Nagelhout late on meant it was honours even, 1-1.

Next up was Wrexham Rednecks of Wales versus England's El Combe Old Boys.

El Combe Old Boys were returning to action for a second shot at the Barcelona Fives. Last year's 2013 Barcelona Fives was their best eurofootballfives.com performance on the pitch where they topped their group with a 100% record. They won their Cup QF on penalties against Spain's ADP Allstars before a 3-1 loss in the Semi-Finals to the eventual winners, Los Swallacticos.

El Combe Old Boys continued their group form from last year as they begun the game well. A goal from Alan Ritchie in the first half put them ahead and it was a lead they would retain until the break. However, just like Tinniedad & Tobacco they were unable to keep the lead and all 3 points as Leighton Jones levelled the scores in the second period. We had another share of the points at 1-1.

Next up was Naranjitos (Spa) versus ADP Netherlands (Hol).

Naranjitos entered the eurofootballfives.com fold earlier this year at the 2014 Valencia Fives. They started off slowly with a 3-2 defeat before bouncing back with 7-1 and 4-2 wins before a 2-2 draw saw them finish 3rd . They qualified for the Cup as one of the best 3 rd placed teams but went out at the Quarter-Final stage, 5-3, to the eventual winners – Sparta. They make the journey from Valencia to compete in the 2014 Barcelona Fives.

ADP Netherlands already had a game under their belts and maybe they were a bit more warmed up than their opponents in the early exchanges as Jan Van Rabenswaiij opened the scoring for the Dutch team. The man with 7 goals to his name last year was up and running in 2014.

A goal each for Nico Van Der Spoel (ADP Netherlands) and David Moya Aparicio (Naranjitos) meant that 1-0 at half-time became 2-1 at full-time for ADP Netherlands. They had the first win in Group A and led the table on 4 points.

Everyone in Group A was now up and running with a game under their belts. We now had two sides meeting in Game 4 looking for their first win of the day. A solid opening point was gained by each against sides who had performed well in last year's tournament. Could they kick-on and get an all important victory?

It looked like Tinniedad & Tobacco would be opening their account in the win column of Group A as they raced into a 2-0 lead at the break. Oliver Jackson and Will Boulton both claimed their first games of the tournament to put their team in full control.

Wrexham Rednecks had bounced back from defeat in their first fixture, could they do so again? They had double the deficit to recover from this time and Tinniedad & Tobacco looked in no mood to relinquish their superiority in this game. The English team saw out the result to claim all 3 points and joined ADP Netherlands at the summit of Group A.

In the next game we had El Combe Old Boys looking for their first victory and seeing if they could emulate their compatriots, Tinniedad & Tobacco, by using the springboard of an opening game draw to take all 3 points. Naranjitos would be their opponents who currently sat at the foot of the table in the early stages. At the 2014 Valencia Fives they lost their first game and recovered with a 7-1 win in their second game – the English team should be on their guard against a wounded Naranjitos.

We touched upon El Combe Old Boys making a return to the Barcelona Fives but their history with eurofootballfives.com dates back to a successful debut in the 2010 Algarve Open as Vodafone FC where they were drawn in the Group of Death and progressed to the final of the Plate competition. They emerged as worthy winners after a 3-2 victory. In the 2012 Mallorca Tournament, they entered two teams as Vodafone Rangers and El Combe Old Boys. The latter finished 4 th in their 6 team group and played in the Plate competition but were unable to emulate 2010 glory as they went down 2-0 in the Semi-Finals.

As mentioned in Round 1, their 2013 Barcelona Fives appearance was their most successful and they had started in modest fashion today. They fell behind in this one as Javier Sanchez Flores put the Spanish team ahead. El Combe Old Boys recovered after the break to equalise for 1-1 and that's how it finished.

It was a second draw for El Combe Old Boys and a first point of the day for Naranjitos.
