The
Plate Final began with New Ham United looking
to make their early momentum count, and they took
the lead through Mihai Harizomenov, scoring his
fourth goal of the day. TEAM Polonia Limerick
responded through their prolific forward Kuba
Cieloch, who brought his tally for the tournament
to nine with the equaliser. With the teams level
at 1-1 at half-time, the final was finely poised,
and neither side was willing to give an inch in
the battle for the Plate trophy. TEAM Polonia
Limerick edged ahead again when Tomasz Garbut
found the net for his first goal of the day, putting
the Polish side within touching distance of lifting
the silverware. New Ham United, however, were
not ready to let their hopes of a first Plate
title slip away. Karim El Sayed stepped up with
his first goal of the day to make it 2-2, and
that was how the contest finished. With nothing
separating the teams after normal play, the final
would be decided by penalties, just as Polonia's
semi-final against Sporting Armada had been.
TEAM
Polonia Limerick took the first penalty, with
Cieloch confidently converting before Joshua Smith
sent the Polish goalkeeper the wrong way to level
the shootout. Daniel Zwiegela found the bottom-left
corner, Mark Solomon replied into the bottom-right,
and Kacper Kusiak picked out the top-right corner
to put Polonia ahead once more. Harizomenov then
made it 3-3, his penalty carrying enough pace
to beat Pawel Miskiewicz despite the goalkeeper
diving the right way. Sudden death followed, and
Cieloch kept his nerve again to make it 4-3, with
Joshua Smith coming agonisingly close to getting
his fingertips to the effort. Smith then stepped
up to take New Ham's next penalty himself, sending
it down the middle. Miskiewicz dived to his right
but managed to stick out a trailing leg and make
the decisive save, sparking celebrations as TEAM
Polonia Limerick won the shootout and claimed
the 2026 Lloret de Mar Sevens Open Age Plate!
Commiserations
to New Ham United, who once again came so close
to Plate glory. Having finished as runners-up
in Barcelona in 2025, they arrived in Lloret de
Mar hoping to go one better, and they pushed Polonia
all the way in a gripping final. To lose the trophy
on penalties after fighting back to make it 2-2
will be a bitter pill to swallow, but they can
take pride in reaching another Plate Final and
showing the resilience to compete right to the
very last kick. They have now been runners-up
twice in this competition, but perhaps it really
will be third time lucky for New Ham United when
they return for another challenge.
Congratulations
to TEAM Polonia Limerick, the 2026 Lloret de Mar
Sevens Open Age Plate champions! Their journey
to the trophy was sealed in the most dramatic
fashion, winning both their semi-final against
Sporting Armada and the final against New Ham
United on penalties. Even more impressively, Polonia
converted all nine of their penalties across the
two shootouts, showing extraordinary composure
when the pressure was at its highest. Cieloch
continued to deliver at the crucial moments, while
Miskiewicz produced the save that secured the
title. After a challenging spell in the group
phase, Polonia regained their best form when it
mattered most and leave Lloret de Mar with the
Plate trophy to celebrate.
