The
final four teams in the Plate came together in
the semi-finals. We would be guaranteed a Czech
Republic versus England final as the 1st semi-final
was an all Czech game between DHL Prague Red and
Hays. The 2nd semi-final was an all England match
between Reading Royals and AON Top Guns. Based
on previous results on the day so far DHL Prague
Red and AON Top Guns would go into these games
as favourites.
DHL
Prague Red were aiming to reach their 3rd
Plate Final and their 2nd in Prague. They'd had
a break and extra rest courtesy of their bye to
this stage. Sometimes this can work against you
though as limbs stiffen up. Hays
had kept in the groove with their win against
JNJ Global Services. They kept this momentum going
into the game against DHL Prague Red and drew
first blood when Pete Sheppard scored the only
goal of the first half. The second half belonged
to Marc Folkard who scored his second successive
hat-trick. He now had 8 goals for the tournament.
It was far from being a one-sided game though
as two goals from Rupert Baltrock kept DHL Prague
Red in the hunt. It was not to be though for them
and they crashed out 4-2. Congratulations to Hays
on reaching their first eurofootballfives final
at the first attempt.
It
was now Reading Royals
and AON Top Guns
turn to take the field. On Pitch C, both teams
were well up for this game. AON Top Guns did most
of the running and posed most of the attacking
threat. The Reading Royals defence remained firm
though and we entered the break at 0-0. The second
half saw more of the same from AON Top Guns as
they poured forward. Once they got the opening
goal the floodgates opened. It fell to Laurence
Smith to break the deadlock and he doubled the
advantage himself. With the pressure off, Chris
Mould banged in a hat-trick and they both left
it to John O'Brien to round off their scoring.
Reading Royals managed to spoil the AON Top Guns
clean sheet when Martin Scott popped up to grab
a consolation.
