With
all teams safely at the ground and champing at
the bit to begin the 2009 Prague Masters, Group
A kicked off proceedings. In time honoured tradition
it was the defending champions who would get us
underway. Goldsmith Williams
racked up seven wins in seven games in 2008 and
it was DHL Prague Red
who would attempt to prevent them making it 8
consecutive victories. DHL Prague Red were no
strangers to themselves with runners-up medals
(2008 Prague Trophy) and winners medals (2008
Barca Fives). Those achievements were in the Plate
competition so Goldsmith Williams would represent
a step-up for them.
Goldsmith
Williams were favourites and they went about supporting
that theory in the first half as a Chris Williams
goal and Craig Ralph hat-trick put them comfortably
ahead by the break. The first half was not entirely
barren for DHL Prague Red thanks to a goal from
Eduard Veselovsky. The second half began at 4-1
and was closer than the opening period. There
were to be four further goals shared equally between
the two teams. Craig Ralph turning his hat-trick
into a 5-goal salvo whilst Jan Boula and Leo Echeverria
opened their tournament account for the Czech
team. A final score of 6-3. The defending champions
were up and running whilst DHL Prague Red had
performed well.
The
second game of Group A saw two debutants in the
shape of Prague team JNJ
Global Services against touring team, AON
Top Guns. Both teams were untested in eurofootballfives.com
so this would be a match of keen interest. It
was AON Top Guns who drew first blood thanks to
the boot of Chris Mould. Mould himself added a
second before the half time whistle to put the
English team in firm control of this fixture.
In the second half Mould went on to complete his
hat-trick and then add a fourth to round off a
4-0 victory. A great start for them and, although
early doors, they sat on top of the Group A.
Pimp
My Side FC were the only team yet to play
in Group A. Their opening fixture was against
DHL Prague Red
which proved to be the closest game so far. Our
Prague tournaments are usually high scoring affairs
and it is testament to the competitive nature
of this game that goalkeepers Paul O'Neil and
Aibek Dunaev had preserved parity and clean sheets
until half-time. We did see goals in the second
half but there was still nothing to separate the
teams at the final whistle. Eduard Veselovsky
scored for the second consecutive game for the
Czech team whilst Rob Gilhespy scored Pimp My
Side FC's first goal of the competition. Honours
were even and both teams put their first points
on the scoreboard, 1-1.

It
was all eyes on the defending champions Goldsmith
Williams in the next game on Pitch A. They
would meet JNJ Global
Services who were looking to get off the
mark. The match went to form though with Chris
Williams opening the scoring before a brace from
David Lowry. For the second game in a row the
Goldsmith Williams defence was breached. This
time it was David Twort for JNJ Global Services
with their first goal of the competition. It was
3-1 at half-time and Goldsmith Williams will argue
that the defence does not matter too much when
you can rattle in goals for fun. There were four
lots of fun for Goldsmith Williams in the second
half as they ran away with the game in the end.
John Lowry's first of the tournament was followed
by Craig Ralph's 6 th . David Lowry completed
his hat-trick and then the man who opened the
scoring, completed the scoring – Chris Williams.
A final score of 7-1 put Goldsmith Williams in
firm control of Group A with 6 points from two
games and a plus nine goal difference.
AON
Top Guns were looking to follow the defending
champions by making it two wins from two but they
had not countered on Pimp
My Side FC. The latter had secured their
first point in a close match versus DHL Prague
Red and this game would be equally competitive.
With 4 goals in his first game, Chris Mould was
to be the danger man but Geordie team Pimp My
Side FC managed to prevent the marksman finding
the back of the net. At the other end they found
the net themselves twice through Ray Bell in the
first half and Rob Gilhespy in the second. In
the opening game Paul O'Neill preserved a clean
sheet until half-time. In this game he ensured
he would earn a full clean sheet at the final
whistle. A 2-0 win to Pimp My Side FC and they
would go second at the half-way stage.
