Our
Prague tournaments always produce goals but Group
in the 2009 Prague Masters produced more than
most as the referee almost burned out his pencil
trying to keep up. In fact in Group C the net
bulged more often than Elvis's stomach on 54 hamburgers
a day (or however many the glutton put away in
his latter days).
The
first game of the group between SK
Zelenec and Reading
Royals was a sign of things to come with
8 goals. Sadly for the Reading Royals none of
them went in their ‘For' column. In their defence
they were playing a strong SK Zelenec side. In
2008, the Czech team had lost in the semi-finals
of both the Prague Masters and Prague Trophy.
Both times it had been to the eventual winners.
SK Zelenec were off to the perfect start in this
game thanks to goals from Alois Sebek (2), Jiri
Jindra (2), Michal Novak (2), Tomas Krul and the
help of an own goal.
Anything
SK Zelenec could do then Olympique
de Johnny Lauren could do better. Well,
maybe not better, but could equal. They came up
against Czech team Harp
Hospada and put eight goals past their
opponents. The match saw Michael Wheeler start
the tournament with a hat-trick, John Foran and
Marcus Latchford scoring two each with a goal
from Matthew Parry to complete the scoring. Harp
Hospada did score a consolation which put Olympique
de Johnny Lauren into second on goal difference.

The
next game saw Bulgarian team Lozenetz
City make their debut against SK
Zelenec. After two one-sided matches we
were treated to a fantastic contest in this game.
The teams were neck and neck through the game
with neither side being able to shake off their
opponents. A first half Martin Zahumensky strike
for the Czechs was cancelled out Alexander Kyulev
as the teams reached half-time 1-1. Kyulev added
a second for the Bulgarians in the second half
although this was cancelled out by Michal Novak.
There were to be further goals though from Vercislav
Georgiev ( Lozenetz City ) and Alois Sebek (SK
Zelenec) as the game finished 3-3. A great game
and a great contest. Honours even.
After
a big win for Olympique
de Johnny Lauren and a big defeat for Reading
Royals in the opening games you could be
forgiven for thinking this game may be a bit one-sided
but you would have been wrong. These two teams
proved to be very close in terms of ability and
neither team could break the other one down in
the first half. Into the second half and we would
see a goal. That goal would prove decisive and
it came from Olympique de Johnny Lauren. The 1-0
win would put them top on 6 points at the halfway
stage. Heartbreak for Reading Royals but a much
improved performance and something for them to
build on.
The
game that would take us to the mid-way point in
Group C would see Harp
Hospada entertain Lozenetz
City. We are sure that the Bulgarian forwards
would have found this game very entertaining indeed
as they wasted no time at all in starting a goal
rush. It was not a good day to be a Harp Hospada
goalkeeper and 16 times he picked the ball out
of the net in this game. Can you imagine this
game on Soccer Saturday with Jeff Stelling? He'd
blow a gasket. Deep breath and we'll go through
the goalscorers – Hristo Kiosev (5), Vercislav
Georgiev (2), Miroslav Asenov (2), Alexander Sharenkov
(4), Georgi Gruev, Alex Kyulev and Ivan Stoianov.
