Round
5 and the final games in Group B. At this stage
we like to sit back, take stock and see what's
up for grabs as the teams enter the final straight.
So, who needed to do what?
SK
Zelenec: Effectively
through barring huge victories for both Wafty
Crankers (by 8 goals) and Prisoners (by 11 goals).
They would realistically finish 1 st or 2 nd depending
on a whole host of combination of results.
Athletico
Apsley: Win one of their last
two games and they would qualify unless they suffered
a very heavy defeat in the other game. The Plate
was guaranteed even with two defeats.
The
Shooting Shamrocks: Win
and hope Athletico Apsley lose to Prisoners whilst
maintaing a better goal difference than Prisoners.
A place in the Plate was otherwise assured.
Prisoners:
Win and hope Athletico Apsley lose to
The Shooting Shamrocks whilst improving to a better
goal difference than The Shooting Shamrocks. A
place in the Plate was otherwise assured.
Bartley
Greeners: Avoid
defeat to claim 5th place.
The
Wild Rovers:
Beat Bartley Greeners to claim 5th place.
First
up was the tie between Prisoners and Athletico
Apsley. This was a must win game for the Prisoners
despite only suffering defeat once in the tournament.
Athletico Apsley knew they had to avoid defeat
as a draw or win would keep their campaign very
much on track.
When
the game had reached its conclusion it was Athletico
Apsley who were the happier of the two teams.
A 2-2 draw gave them work to do but they were
still in their fighting. The draw put Prisoners
on 8 points – a good total but not enough for
The Cup. In this occasion, a Plate semi-final
would await them.
Bartley
Greeners and The Wild Rovers met in the battle
for 5th place. A very close game ensued and the
Wild Rovers were finally rewarded for their exploits
with three points to see them leapfrog their opponents
in the Group B standings. For Bartley Greeners
it was a better performance but not enough to
keep their Irish opponents at bay as they slipped
to 6th place. Both teams added a lot to the competition
and their day would now continue in the bar with
a well earned beer.
All
this left one final game – The Shooting Shamrocks
versus Athletico Apsley. Athleitco Apsley's point
against Prisoners gave them the edge moving onto
8 points. The Shooting Shamrocks, just one point
behind on 7, were the only side that could prevent
Apsley's safe passage to the Cup semi-finals.
The Irish team from Askeaton FC knowing that only
a win would be good enough.
The
game was a close one and a low-scoring one befitting
of the nervy, tense atmosphere that surrounded
the fixture. In the end it was just a solitary
strike that would separate the two teams and decide
it. The goal came from Joseph Tilt not only sending
Athletico Apsley to victory and the Cup semi-finals
but also propelling them to the top of Group B.
The
Shooting Shamrocks falling just short at the last
hurdle but putting in a strong performance. It
was not all over for them though as they had the
knock-out stages of the Plate competition to look
forward to.
