As
teams entered their third matches of the tournament,
attention on Pitch C turned to an important Group
B clash between Sheffield Thursday Blue of England
and Spanish leaders Arenal. Arenal had made a
flawless start to the competition with two victories,
four goals scored and, crucially, none conceded.
Sheffield Thursday Blue, meanwhile, had bounced
back impressively from their opening defeat to
Eltham International by recording a convincing
6-1 victory in their previous fixture. Sitting
amongst a cluster of teams tied on points behind
the leaders, the English side knew this match
could play a major role in shaping their qualification
hopes.
The
opening half produced a competitive and closely
fought encounter with very little separating the
two sides. Sheffield Thursday Blue looked determined
to test Arenal's defensive record, while the Spanish
side continued to display the organisation and
composure that had underpinned their excellent
start to the tournament. Ultimately, just one
goal separated the teams before the break, and
it came from Santi Soler, who scored for the second
consecutive game to give Arenal a narrow 1-0 advantage.
At
half-time, the Spanish side still had not conceded
a single goal in the tournament.
That
impressive defensive record finally came to an
end early in the second half when Sheffield Thursday
Blue struck back. Daniel Easton, fresh from his
hat-trick heroics in the previous match, continued
his strong form by levelling the scores at 1-1.
The English side suddenly looked capable of taking
valuable points from the group leaders and pushed
forward with renewed belief. However, Arenal once
again demonstrated why they sat top of the table.
Jose Gonzalez followed Soler's example by scoring
in his second consecutive game, restoring the
Spanish advantage at 2-1. From there, Arenal defended
resolutely and refused to allow Sheffield Thursday
Blue another route back into the contest.
At
full-time, Arenal celebrated a hard-earned 2-1
victory that maintained their perfect start and
extended their lead at the top of Group B. Three
wins from three, combined with a strong defensive
record and consistent goalscoring form, underlined
their credentials as one of the standout teams
in the tournament so far. Sheffield Thursday Blue,
despite the defeat, could take plenty of encouragement
from a spirited performance against the leaders.
They remained provisionally second in the table,
although the teams around them still held games
in hand as the battle for qualification intensified.

Game
7 of Group B saw the battle for Cup and Plate
qualification intensify as Eltham International
faced Riises Pieces in a hugely important contest.
Earlier in the round, one of the teams level
on three points had fallen to leaders Arenal,
meaning the winner here would place themselves
firmly in pole position for Cup qualification.
Riises Pieces entered the fixture with growing
momentum after recovering from a narrow opening
defeat with an emphatic 5-0 victory in their
previous outing. Eltham International, meanwhile,
had experienced the opposite trajectory, beginning
with a strong 3-1 win before suffering a 3-0
setback against Arenal.
It
was Eltham International who struck first and
reminded everyone of the attacking quality they
possessed. Stefano Chagas, who had announced
himself with a hat-trick in the opening game,
continued his fine tournament form by scoring
his fourth goal of the competition to put the
English side ahead. However, Riises Pieces responded
brilliantly and once again relied on the goalscoring
instincts of Dan Willoughby. Having scored twice
in the previous match, he stepped up again to
level the game at 1-1 and swing momentum back
towards his side.
Riises
Pieces continued to grow stronger as the game
progressed, and their confidence became increasingly
evident. Liam O'Doherty, who had also been amongst
the goals in the previous fixture, produced
a decisive spell in front of goal. He first
completed the comeback by putting Riises Pieces
2-1 ahead before striking again to make it 3-1.
Suddenly the English side looked full of belief,
moving the ball with confidence and controlling
the key moments of the match as Eltham International
struggled to regain their footing.
At
the final whistle, Riises Pieces concluded a
superb 3-1 victory that propelled them into
second place in the Group B standings. After
beginning the tournament with defeat, they had
responded in outstanding fashion with back-to-back
wins and were now in a strong position to secure
Cup qualification heading into the final round
of fixtures. For Eltham International, meanwhile,
the defeat left work still to be done, with
qualification now hanging in the balance as
the group stage approached its climax.

Group
B continued with Wentworth Arms B preparing to
take the field for their third match of the tournament.
It had been a difficult start for the English
side, who had suffered heavy defeats of 6-1 and
5-0 in their opening two fixtures. Unfortunately
for them, the challenge did not get any easier
as they came up against group leaders Arenal.
The Spanish side had been flawless so far, winning
all three of their matches and establishing themselves
as one of the strongest teams in the competition.
This would be Arenal's final group game and represented
their last opportunity to add further points to
an already impressive tally.
The
mathematics were straightforward for the Spanish
side. A draw would guarantee the Group B title,
while a victory would secure top spot in emphatic
fashion with a perfect 100% record. Wentworth
Arms B, meanwhile, were looking to halt the momentum
of the group leaders and build some confidence
ahead of the knockout stages. However, the game
quickly began to follow the form book. Hector
Guinot opened the scoring for Arenal before Fran
Ruvuelta doubled the advantage with his second
goal of the tournament. Santi Soler then continued
his excellent form by scoring for the third game
in succession to make it 3-0 and cap a dominant
first-half display from the Spanish outfit.
Arenal
maintained their control after the break and showed
no signs of easing off. Alex Pesset added a fourth
goal as the pressure on Wentworth Arms B continued
to mount. Santi Soler then struck again to score
his fourth goal of the competition and complete
a comprehensive 5-0 victory. Throughout the contest,
Arenal looked composed in possession, clinical
in front of goal and organised defensively, further
underlining why they had emerged as one of the
standout teams of the group stage.
At
the final whistle, Arenal celebrated a fourth
consecutive victory that confirmed them as Group
B champions with a perfect record. Four wins from
four, combined with impressive attacking football
and defensive solidity, made them fully deserving
winners of the group and a team that others would
now fear in the knockout rounds. For Wentworth
Arms B, it was another difficult result, leaving
them with three defeats from three matches. However,
they still had one fixture remaining and would
hope to use that opportunity to gain some momentum
and confidence ahead of the knockout phase.

The
penultimate game of Group B saw Sheffield Thursday
Blue face Riises Pieces in a match with significant
implications for the qualification picture. Riises
Pieces arrived in excellent form, having won their
last two matches and knowing that a draw would
likely be enough to secure their place in the
Cup competition. Sheffield Thursday Blue's campaign
had been more inconsistent, with an opening defeat
followed by a strong response and then a narrow,
competitive performance against group leaders
Arenal. On paper, it had all the ingredients for
a tight encounter, particularly with both sides
still having plenty to play for in the final standings.
Riises
Pieces, however, quickly imposed themselves on
the contest and showed exactly why they had built
such momentum in recent games. Their attacking
rhythm and confidence in possession caused problems
from the outset, and it was Dan Willoughby who
once again proved decisive. He opened the scoring
before striking again to put his side firmly in
control, continuing a superb personal run of form.
Sheffield Thursday Blue struggled to contain the
movement and sharpness of the attacking pair,
and Riises Pieces capitalised on their dominance
as Willoughby went on to complete his hat-trick,
taking his tournament tally to six goals.
Alongside
him, Liam O'Doherty also continued his excellent
recent scoring run. Having been influential in
previous matches, he added further control to
the performance and eventually got his reward
with a goal of his own. His finish sealed a convincing
4-0 victory, reflecting Riises Pieces' growing
authority as the group stage progressed. Sheffield
Thursday Blue, for all their effort, were unable
to find a breakthrough against a well-organised
and confident opponent, as Riises Pieces maintained
control from start to finish.
At
full-time, Riises Pieces confirmed second place
in Group B with nine points from a possible 12,
scoring 12 goals and conceding just twice across
their campaign. It was an impressive performance,
combining defensive discipline with an attacking
cutting edge, and arguably their strongest showing
in a eurofootballfives tournament to date. Sheffield
Thursday Blue, meanwhile, remained in third position
for the moment, although with results elsewhere
still to be decided, they could yet slip down
the table. Either way, their path was now set
for Plate competition as they prepared for the
knockout phase.

The
final game of Group B saw Eltham International
take on Wentworth Arms B in a match that carried
significant knockout implications, particularly
for the ‘home' side. Eltham International began
the day in fourth place but still held their fate
in their own hands, knowing that a draw could
lift them into third, while a victory would give
them a strong chance of finishing as one of the
best third-placed teams across the groups. Wentworth
Arms B, meanwhile, arrived having endured a difficult
campaign, conceding heavily in earlier matches
but still with an opportunity to restore pride
in their final outing. With Group B finely balanced
in terms of qualification permutations, the stakes
remained high despite the contrasting form of
both sides.
The
opening half proved to be a tense and cautious
affair, with neither side able to break the deadlock
despite periods of pressure. Eltham International
were unable to convert their chances. Wentworth
Arms B defended with improved organisation compared
to previous matches and succeeded in frustrating
their opponents. As a result, the teams went into
half-time locked at 0-0, with everything still
to play for in the second period.
The
breakthrough eventually arrived after the restart,
and it was Eltham International who struck first.
Tony Martinez opened the scoring to give his side
a crucial advantage, before Thomas Quinton added
a second to put them firmly on course for victory.
That second goal proved especially important in
the context of qualification, as goal difference
and goals scored were expected to play a decisive
role in determining the best third-placed finishers.
Wentworth Arms B did manage to respond through
Sam Bagshaw, reducing the deficit and scoring
their second goal of the day, but they were unable
to find an equaliser as Eltham International managed
the closing stages effectively.
At
full-time, Eltham International secured a 2-1
victory, a result that proved enough to lift them
into third place in the group. Crucially, they
also finished as the second-best third-placed
team across the groups, edging qualification on
goals scored after finishing level on goal difference
with The Vic FC. For Wentworth Arms B, it was
a narrow defeat in a difficult campaign, but their
improved second-half performance offered some
encouragement as they turned their attention to
the Plate competition.
