The 9th July 2022 was a memorable moment in eurofootballfives.com history as it marked our first ever Sevens tournament. After 119 successful Fives & Sixes events in Europe dating back to 2007 it was great to add this Sevens event to our programme. Almost 12 months on we were delighted to be back to see who, if anyone, could wrestle the title from Humble Goats grasp.

The first teams in action in Group A were Foot 130 (Fra) and Cheesecake FC (Eng-Ned). Foot 130 were on debut and as such were an unknown quantity but Cheesecake FC were familiar with our tournaments including our Amsterdam events having appeared 11 times before across our destinations and twice here in the Dutch capital. We will preview them in more detail as we progress with this report.

With the action on the pitch underway it was the French team and debutants that got off to a flyer in this game. They drew first blood in the opening period when Basile De Fontenay opened his team's and his personal account for 1-0. That's the way it stayed until half-time but the French eased away from their opponents after the break. William Dien doubled the lead before Maxime Remesy extended the advantage to three. Dmitry Elistratov put the game to bed at 4-0 and sealed an impressive opening victory for his team.

It was a tough opening game for Cheesecake FC but the beauty of the 6-team group is that there was plenty of games left to make their mark on this tournament.

The first phase of the 2023 Amsterdam Sevens would be decided on a group basis with two groups of 6 teams. Each team would play each other team in their group once and therefore 5 group games. After which, depending on position, they would progress to the Cup or Plate competition.

The teams finishing 1 st and 2 nd in each group would progress to the Cup competition. This would be played as a knock-out phase with Semi-Finals and Final. The teams finishing 3 rd and 4 th in each group would progress to the Plate competition. This would be played as a knock-out phase with Semi-Finals and Final. The teams finishing 5 th and 6 th in each group would be eliminated.

The next teams in action in Group A were Uden Filter (Den) and Bullets FC (Eng). Both teams were on debut and so they had a blank canvas upon which to paint their footballing artistry. Let the games commence……

Uden Filter started brightly but were denied by the post, cross-bar and Bullets FC goalkeeper. Bullets FC grew into the game and it was Kaymon Lisney who opened the scoring. Uden Filter hit back though with Mohammad Shabban Hussain finding the back of the net for 1-1. We ended the first half with honours even. There was no addition to the scoring after the break as both teams would have to settle for a point. Only time would tell if this was a point gained or two points dropped.

The final fixture in the opening round of Group A was a match between two more teams on debut appearance at our events. El Cholo (Ned) were in action against Abington Stanley (Eng).

El Cholo's Mehdi Al Kahlili emerged as the match-winner, netting the only goal of the game during the first half. His strike came as a result of a well-executed attacking move, with Al Kahlili finding himself in the right place at the right time to slot the ball past Abington Stanley's goalkeeper.

Abington Stanley, determined not to leave empty-handed, fought back fiercely, launching numerous attacks in search of an equalizer. Their players exhibited great skill and determination, applying pressure on El Cholo's defense throughout the second half. However, El Cholo's defense and goalkeeper were resolute, thwarting Abington Stanley's attempts to find the back of the net.

As the final whistle blew, El Cholo celebrated their victory, having secured a 1-0 win in their opening game. Abington Stanley, although defeated, displayed great promise and resilience in their inaugural outing.
