After
35 games of football we came down to the most
important of them all. Game 36 – The
2014 JNJ Euro Soccer Tournament Cup Final.
With six games of football already under their
belt the two teams would need to summon one last
burst of energy to ensure they would be picking
up winners and not runners-up medals in the presentation.
The
sub-plot to the Cup Final this year was could
JNJ High Wycombe get that monkey off their back
and claim their maiden JNJ Euro Soccer Tournament
title. They had appeared in every single Cup Final
so far but had missed out on Golden Goal to JNJ
Croatia in 2012 and to JNJ Russia A in 2013. Could
this be third time lucky?
Their
opponents, Tekkers Lovakia, would be hoping to
cause a stir on debut by going all the way to
claim victory and leave JNJ High Wycombe A as
the bridesmaids for a third occasion. If we have
a look at the two teams records today it reads;
Tekkers
Lovakia: Played 6, won 5, drawn 1, lost none scoring
14 goals and conceding just 3.
JNJ
High Wycombe A: Played 6, won 5, drawn 1, lost
none scoring 23 goals and conceding just 3.
As
you can see the two records are virtually identical
but could that extra firepower and also experience
of these Cup Finals give JNJ High Wycombe A the
edge? The flip side is that Tekkers Lovakia were
not scarred or burdened by past Cup Final defeats.
There
was a cracking atmosphere pitch-side with all
the other teams and spectators lining the touchlines
and occupying the grandstand to watch these two
teams in action. For most of the first half it
was a game of chess with nothing really between
the two teams and chances conspicuous by their
absence. It looked like we would have a goal-less
first half as the two defences were on top until
Rob Buckland pulled a rabbit out of the hat. There
seemed to be no danger for Tekkers Lovakia with
Buckland out towards the left touchline a fair
distance out but a quick turn and shot, perhaps
unexpectedly, flashed across the penalty area
and in off the far post. It was a great strike
and nothing the Tekkers Lovakia goalkeeper could
have done.
It
was the one moment that separated the two teams
in the first half. Early in the second half Rob
Buckland scored again to make it 2-0 to JNJ High
Wycombe A and they were seemingly cruising to
victory.
Tekkers
Lovakia were not ready to concede defeat as Josh
Lynn reduced the deficit to 2-1 and set-up a thrilling
finale. There was renewed confidence and spirit
from Tekkers Lovakia and renewed concentration
from JNJ High Wycombe A now their two goal cushion
had been halved. Time was beginning to run out
for Tekkers Lovakia but in the dying embers of
the game a frantic scramble in the JNJ High Wycombe
A penalty area threatened an equaliser but JNJ
High Wycombe A managed to clear their lines and
with that they had secured victory.
We
offer our consolations to Tekkers Lovakia who
came so close to glory at the first attempt. They
collected Runners-Up medals in the presentation
and who's to say they won't be winners medals
at a future tournament.
The
personal honours of the day went to Gaspar Arutyunov
of JNJ Russia B with a haul of 10 goals on the
day. He became the second Russian to win the title
after Artem Khodas in Budapest 2013.
Our
congratulations today though go to JNJ High Wycombe
A – worthy 2014 Euro Soccer Tournament Champions!
We hope to see you all again at a tournament very
soon.
