The afternoon knock-out phase of the 2011 Barca Fives began with the Plate Quarter-Finals. There would be 3 Quarter-Finals as Breckland FC had earned themselves a bye to the Semi-Finals courtesy of their 3rd placed finish in Group B. The three Quarter-Finals would be contested by the teams finishing 4th and 5th in each group.

First up was Hiscox Bulls versus Kazakhstan FC on Pitch A. Hiscox Bulls had struggled early on against top quality opposition but in their last group game had earned a draw to give them some form of momentum going into this fixture. Kazakhstan FC were generally considered favourites with a return of four points from their group games.

As the game panned out it was Kazakhstan FC who forged ahead and took a 1-0 lead into the second half. Their goal was scored by Mik Nelson and it put them on their way to the Semi-Finals. Hiscox Bulls were not to be beaten though and pulled level to make it 1-1 and take the game into extra time.

Extra time in our tournaments are always Golden Goal so the match was now on a knife-edge. One moment of brilliance or one mistake would settle it with the team on the wrong end of the goal having their day ended in an instant. The Golden Goal in this tie was scored by Brian Leigh, a captain's goal, for Kazakhstan FC and they were through. It was the end of the tournament sadly for Hiscox Bulls.

The second quarter-final was an intriguing affair as CBD Boys met HMS Sultan FC. HMS Sultan FC were the favourites with the better group record but CBD Boys had just got their first points on the board. The preview to the game was very much similar to the previous Semi-Final with one team on 4 points and the other on 1 point.

We were also treated to a tight contest as per the previous Quarter-Final. There were 5 goals to keep the scorers busy and unfortunately for the team from Oman they found themselves on the losing side of the result, 3-2. They did have goals to celebrate from Mehdi Bastani and Daley Mathias but could not do quite enough to get their debut win. The goals for HMS Sultan FC were scored by Barry McCabe, Jason Biddulph and then a captain's goal to provide the winner from Chris Belsten. So many parallels with the previous Quarter-Final!

HMS Sultan FC were through to the semi-finals but it was, sadly for CBD Boys, adios to the men in white.

Return of the Dancing Horses III were up next in the 3 rd Quarter-Final against Arse-A-Lona. The former had probably been the unluckiest team of the tournament thus far suffering three 1-0 defeat's in their four games and would need to avoid a repeat to continue their participation in this tournament. Arse-A-Lona had fared a little better in the group phase picking up a 2-2 draw in their last group game.

The winning team would earn a Semi-Final tie against HMS Sultan FC and it looked like being Arse-A-Lona FC when Lee Shaw gave his side a crucial lead. Defensively Return of the Dancing Horses III had performed well today but their achilles heel had been finding goals at the other end. They really needed to find a goal here to prevent them going out at this stage.

It was a goal that was to prove elusive as Craig Beadnail kept a cleansheet for the Arse-A-Lona and with it booked his team's place in the final four. History had repeated itself for the Dancing Horses and it was their fourth 1-0 defeat in as many games.
