The
2009 Algarve Open Plate Final was guaranteed to
be England v Portugal as we had one all Portuguese
semi-final and one all English semi-final. Pitch
A would withness the all English affair between
CSF Porto and Top Gun & Weasel. CSF Porto
had knocked out Top Gun & Weasel's sister
squad Rolling Circus in the last round so would
be looking for a second scalp. Top Gun & Weasel
always promised to be a tougher task than the
Circus though and that's they way it proved.
CSF
Porto started the brighter and found themselves
taking the lead through Oz Zamora. It got even
better for the CSF as they extended their lead
to two goals when Thomas Mottram made it two goals
in two goals for him. Although 2-0 down at the
break Top Gun & Weasel did not give up and
battled valiantly. They got a goal their endeavour
deserved as Alun Chorlton broke through the CSF
defence and dumped keeper James Nott on his arse
to make it 2-1. The equaliser proved elusive and
CSF Porto had made it through to another Plate
final.
Who
would be their opposition though? It was Amigos
da Loira and Olhanense who would battle it out
for that particular privilege. The fabled Olhanense
defence maintained it's reputation by shutting
out their opposition. The Amigos de Loira defence
was equally as miserly preventing their opposition
from breaking through. The game was 0-0 at full
time. Two periods of golden goal extra time and
there was still no break in the deadlock. It was
now up to a penalty shoot-out to decide who would
make the final.
The
very first Amigos da Loira penalty was saved by
Wilson Brito and surely we weren't in for a 0-0
shoot-out? This theory was quickly put to bed
as the next 5 penalties were dispatched emphatically
meaning that Olhanense had held their nerve to
go through 3-2 on penalties.
