The
fourth and final group was group D. The pre-tournament
favourites Olympic Phil Babb lined up in Game
1 against local side Amigos Da Loira. Olympic
Phil Babb were the reigning Amsterdam Fives champions
having won 5 out of 6 fixtures in the Dutch capital
last July. They were on a 4 match unbeaten streak
going into their first game in Algarve and they
started off where they finished in Amsterdam .
A goal in each half from Alex Woolston saw them
through to a solid 2-0 victory.
Who
would be able to challenge Olympic Phil Babb in
Group D? Maniche's Mean Machine and Top Gun &
Weasel were two of the contenders. They kicked
off in the second game of the group but were unable
to find a goal between them as goalkeepers Ross
Sylvester and Alex Price proved dominant as the
game finished 0-0. A good solid point to get their
challenge running.
CSF
Benfica would start their campaign in daunting
style against Olympic Phil Babb. If they were
worried before the start they were right to be
as Olympic Phil Babb showed no mercy. Two more
goals for Alex Woolston in the first half set
the ball rolling. A second half double from James
Cooper and a goal from Joe Wille rounded off a
5-0 win. Olympic Phil Babb were looking good once
again with 7 goals, 6 points and 2 clean sheets
from their first two fixtures. CSF Benfica would
hope all games were not this tough.
Portugal
's Amigos da Loira had also come unstuck against
Olympic Phil Babb and were aiming to bounce back
against Maniche's Mean Machine. The Mean Machine
had become in solid but unspectacular style with
a 0-0 against Top Gun & Weasel. They would
again keep it tight at the back with Ross Sylvester
claiming his 2 nd consecutive clean sheet. This
time round they found their shooting boots though
as Rich Allen opened his and the team's goal account.
Final result, 1-0.
Top
Gun & Weasel began by taking a point after
keeping things tight. They seemed to take the
same approach against CSF Benfica who would look
to take anything after their 5-0 defeat at the
hands (or feet) of Olympic Phil Babb. This game
proved just as tight with Alex Price in the Top
Gun goal again unbeaten. Unfortunately for them
they were unable to find the net at the other
end as neither CSF Benfica nor Top Gun & Weasel
could successfully find the route to goal. The
game ended 0-0 – a first point for CSF Benfica
and a second for Top Gun & Weasel putting
them third.
