When
CSF Porto took to the field against Olhanense
the CSF were competing in their third Plate Final.
In October 2007 they narrowly lost in the Prague
Trophy but followed this up 6 months later in
the 2008 Krakow Trophy with victory. Having missed
out on a final in Barcelona in November they would
be keen to give themselves an overall winning
record in Plate finals.
Olhanense
were no mugs though and featured a couple of players
from the ‘Chelsea' squad in the 2008 Premiership
In… Portugal . You may also recall these two sides
met earlier in their very first game of the day
when they trudged off after a 0-0 draw. You could
therefore say these teams were evenly matched.
Olhanense had played out four 0-0 draws in six
games so with that in mind the first goal of this
game was going to be even more crucial than usual
in this final.
As
a spectacle the game needed CSF Porto to score
it and entice their opponents on the attack and
open the game up. That is exactly what happened
as Sean Jones put the CSF ahead in the first half.
The CSF defence held firm and when the teams turned
around they maintained their one goal lead.
As
Olhanense pushed forward in the second half they
left their defence a little exposed. That's all
that the CSF needed to take advantage and Sean
Jones bagged his second of the game and fourth
of the tournament to put the CSF 2-0 up and claim
the 2009 Algarve Open Plate trophy for the CSF.
The
result was a second trophy in five outings for
these veterans of eurofootballfives action. Congratulations
to them and commiserations to Olhanense who had
battled hard all day.
