The
first Cup Semi-Final between home side Maritimo
Olhanense and Maniche's Mean Machine was to prove
a topsy-turvy affair.
First
blood went to Maritimo Olhanense who took charge
of the tie thanks to a first-hald double from
Celso Rosario. These were his 6th and 7th goals
of the tournament keeping him in the mix for the
top goalscorer prize. Liam Dutson got on the scoresheet
for Maniche's Mean Machine, his 5th of the competition,
to keep the English team in the game. At 2-1 up
the game was in Maritimo's hands although not
going to be easy against an unbeaten side.
Maniche's
Mean Machine came out firing in the second half
and drew level through Rich Allen. This was a
real game for goalscorers coming to the fore as
this goal was also his fifth of the tournament.
At 2-2 the game was perfectly poised and there
was to be one more goal in normal time to decide
which of these teams would make it through the
final. That goal was a second of the game for
Rich Allen who had earned his team the right to
play in their first final with a 3-2 victory.
Comiserations to Maritimo Olhanense and with their
exit the hopes of a Portuguese team winning the
tournament went.
That
is because the second semi-final was an all England
match up between Olympic Phil Babb and Cantona's
Classicos. Both teams had gone through the mill
in the quarter-finals need extra time and/or penalties
to reach this stage. Maybe the quarter-final scare
worked in Olympic Phil Babb's favour and fired
them up for this fixture.
Olympic
Phil Babb came out blazing with Alex Woolston
giving them the early lead. James Cooper doubled
the lead to 2-0 before Chris Jarrett made it 3-0
and it was still not even half-time. Half-time
came and went with the score still 3-0 and a heroic
second half performance required for Cantona's
Classicos to recover and stay in the competition.
Cantona's
Classicos did pull the came back somewhat in the
second half and managed to match their opponents
sharing four goals. Craig Bryant scored a brace
for the Classicos whilst Martin Hinks and James
Batty both opened their personal goalscoring accounts
for Olympic Phil Babb. The 5-2 final score was
emphatic and Olympic Phil Babb's march for a second
tournament win continued. Well done to Cantona's
Classicos for their best showing in a tournament
so far. Final next time lads? |
