Up next was Boca Seniors Warsaw versus The A Team. The two teams had experienced wildly different results from their opening two fixtures.

Boca Seniors Warsaw had started off superbly with a 3-0 win but had then been brought back down to earth with a 5-1 defeat at the hands of Alea Iacta Est. The A Team had seen their 15-game unbeaten group phase record ended in Round 1 (1-0 to Yac Club) but had bounced back with a thumping win (4-0 v Sutton on Tour). Momentum was with the French team.

The A Team had won their group on 4 of their last 5 appearances in our tournaments and had finished runners-up in our tournaments on 3 occasions. Time was still on their side but they could afford no more slip ups especially with the form of the top two in Group A. It was to be a disappointing start for The A Team though as they fell behind to a second goal of the tournament from Jonathan Kraayenbrink.

Boca Seniors Warsaw had their noses in front at half-time and they were to see the game out in the second half despite the attacking prowess of The A Team. Randy Tchutio came close to an equalizer with a strike following a corner. The ball hit the bar and bounced down – was it over the line? It was hard to tell from our vantage point but crucially the referee did not give it. The 1-0 win saw Boca Seniors Warsaw go level with the top two although they had played an extra game. The A Team had left themselves a lot of work to do in the final two games.

The next game in Round 3 was a top of the table clash between Alea Iacta Est and Yac Club. Both teams had a 100% record with two wins from two. Alea Iacta Est currently lead the way due to superior goal difference.

For Yac Club this had equalled their best ever start to a tournament where they opened up with two wins at the 2017 Barcelona Fives playing as P Slayers. 1-0 to the Arsenal was rapidly becoming 1-0 to the Yac Club as they won both their opening games by that score. They were on course for a hat-trick when Dave Netherway made it 3 goals in 3 games.

Alea Iacta Est had also equalled their best start to a eurofootballfives.com tournament with an opening two wins that they also achieved at the 2019 Gdansk Tournament. They had their work cut out to keep their unbeaten record going as Yac Club were yet to concede today…until now. Krzystzof Kurzeja was the man of the moment for the Polish team as he pulled his team level at 1-1.

The match finished 1-1 and the teams would finish Round 3 as they started – in first and second position in the table.

FC Dad's most recent tournament was the 2019 Barcelona Fives – strangely, due to Covid, this was our most recent tournament too. So, FC Dad were playing in consecutive tournaments. In Barcelona, they began with a 4-0 defeat to KLM but returned with a good 1-0 victory over Paralytic Athletic. A narrow 1-0 defeat followed against the 2015 champions which preceded another couple of defeats to Ospinas Coladas and a strong FC Miracle team from Hungary. FC Dad qualified for the Trophy and they returned to winning ways with a 3-1 win over home team Footballab. Another 3-1 win in the Semi-Final (v Cranwell) set up a final against PVDC Eindhoven. It was to be runners-up medals though for FC Dad as they lost the Trophy Final, 1-0.

So far today they had suffered two narrow 1-0 defeats. They were against Sutton on Tour who were also looking for their first points although they had two tough games to start.

The first half proved to be a close affair with nothing to separate the two teams, 0-0.

At the start of the second half Calum Jones pounced on an errant clearance from Sutton on Tour and thumped the ball home into an empty net from just inside the opposition's half. Sutton on Tour tried in vain for an equalizer but they did come close as a delightful through ball from Daniel Ball, dinked over the defence, found Ben Whitfield who lobbed the FC Dad ‘keeper but also lifted it just over the bar. Final score, 1-0 to FC Dad.
