The
first Plate semi-final of the Utrecht Sevens brought
together Mngball FC and Panini Boys. Mngball FC
had earned their spot in the last four by finishing
third in their group, which meant they were able
to bypass the quarter-final stage. Panini Boys,
meanwhile, had taken the more dramatic route,
surviving an incredible penalty shootout against
Fenerbahce SK in the previous round to keep their
tournament alive. Both teams had shown plenty
of resilience throughout the competition, and
another tight contest was expected.
That
was exactly how the opening stages unfolded. There
was very little to separate the two sides, with
both teams defending well and struggling to find
a way through. Panini Boys had yet to record a
victory in normal time during the tournament,
but their performances had consistently shown
they were capable of competing with anyone. Their
issue had been finding the decisive moment in
front of goal, and once again that cutting edge
proved difficult to find as the game remained
locked at 0-0 at half-time.
The
second half continued in the same competitive
manner, with both teams knowing that one mistake
or one moment of quality could decide the outcome.
Panini Boys continued to push and search for the
breakthrough, but Mngball FC showed the composure
and experience that had helped them progress deep
into the Plate competition. Having scored five
goals in their previous knockout match against
Fenerbahce SK, they knew they had goals in them,
but in this game it was patience rather than firepower
that proved decisive. With just around three minutes
remaining, Mngball FC finally found the breakthrough.
Joe Olding delivered the crucial moment, putting
his side 1-0 ahead at the perfect time. From there,
Mngball FC managed the closing stages brilliantly,
showing excellent game management to protect their
narrow advantage and deny Panini Boys any opportunity
to force penalties.
The
final whistle confirmed a 1-0 victory for Mngball
FC, sending them through to the Utrecht Sevens
Plate final. For Panini Boys, it was another narrow
defeat in a tournament where they had been competitive
in every match but had struggled to get over the
line. Their penalty shootout heroics had taken
them one step further, but they were ultimately
undone by another fine margin. For Mngball FC,
it was a professional and composed performance,
and they now have the chance to finish the tournament
by lifting the Plate trophy.
