Judas
FC began the final with the confidence of a team
that had been building momentum throughout the
day, and they made the perfect start. Fraser Burns,
who had not scored since the opening game of the
tournament, returned to the scoresheet at the
perfect moment by putting Judas FC 1-0 ahead.
It was his third goal of the competition, and
a hugely important one. The English side continued
to press and soon doubled their advantage in unfortunate
circumstances for Billareal. A chaotic moment
inside the six-yard box saw the ball bounce around
dangerously, and despite the goalkeeper's desperate
attempt to clear while on the ground, the ball
could only be turned into his own net for an unfortunate
own goal. Judas FC were firmly in control at 2-0.
Billareal
were struggling to contain the pressure, and Judas
FC continued to push forward looking for a decisive
third goal. That moment arrived before half-time
when Fraser Burns struck again, completing his
second brace of the tournament and extending the
lead to 3-0. It was a devastating blow for Billareal
and gave Judas FC exactly the kind of advantage
they had built their tournament around. They had
already recorded four clean sheets in their six
matches before the final, and their ability to
defend a lead had been one of their biggest strengths.
The
second half saw Billareal give everything in an
attempt to find a way back into the final. They
battled, created opportunities and refused to
give up, but they came up against a Judas FC defence
that had been exceptional throughout the tournament.
Goalkeeper Jay Walsh and his defenders once again
showed outstanding organisation and discipline,
keeping Billareal at bay and protecting the three-goal
advantage. Just as they had done in the semi-final
against Young Stars, where a 2-0 half-time lead
became a 2-0 full-time victory, Judas FC managed
the game superbly. The final whistle confirmed
a 3-0 victory.
Commiserations
to Billareal, who can be incredibly proud of their
journey to the Utrecht Sevens Cup final. They
had been one of the most exciting teams in the
tournament, combining attacking quality with resilience
when it mattered most. Their semi-final victory
over Blue Balls FC was a classic encounter, and
they showed tremendous character to twice come
from behind before holding their nerve in the
penalty shootout. In the final, they simply came
up against a Judas FC side who were at the very
top of their game. Reaching a major final is a
fantastic achievement, and Billareal can take
great credit for an excellent tournament.
Congratulations
to Judas FC on becoming Utrecht Sevens 2026 Cup
champions. Their victory was built on a superb
combination of defensive strength, attacking quality
and outstanding game management. Jay Walsh and
his defence were magnificent throughout the knockout
stages, finishing the tournament with an incredible
five clean sheets from seven matches. At the other
end of the pitch, players such as Fraser Burns,
Sam Dixon and Shameek Farrell delivered the goals
in decisive moments when their team needed them
most. But this was a whole team effort with goals
from a variety of sources and defenders who don't
get their name in lights. Judas FC remained unbeaten
throughout the tournament, defeated some of the
strongest teams in the competition and fully deserved
their place at the top of the podium. It was a
superb team performance and a memorable tournament
victory.
The
2026 Utrecht Sevens was a fantastic celebration
of competitive football, with teams from across
Europe producing countless memorable moments throughout
the day. From dramatic penalty shootouts and late
winners to tight defensive battles and high-scoring
thrillers, the tournament showcased everything
that makes these events special. Congratulations
to all the teams and thank you for contributing
to such an enjoyable competition. We look forward
to welcoming everyone back for more European football
adventures in the future.
