Welcome
to Utrecht and the 2026 Utrecht Sevens. Following
26 tournaments in Amsterdam, Utrecht became our
2nd destination in the Netherlands and our 18th
tournament destination in Europe.
Group
A of the 2026 Utrecht Sevens got underway with
an intriguing contest between two tournament debutants
as Dream Team of Poland faced Panini Boys of the
Netherlands. With both sides making their first
appearance in eurofootballfives.com competition,
there was naturally plenty of anticipation surrounding
the opening fixture. The first game of any tournament
is always important, with an early victory providing
not only three valuable points but also confidence
and momentum for the matches to come.
Dream
Team settled into the occasion well and were the
first side to make their mark on the tournament.
Mateusz Panko showed great composure in front
of goal to write his name into the history books
by scoring Dream Team's first-ever eurofootballfives.com
goal, giving the Polish side a 1–0 lead. Panini
Boys responded positively and refused to let the
game slip away before the interval. Peter Langhout
found the equaliser with an excellent finish,
ensuring the teams went into half-time level at
1–1 after an entertaining opening period.
The
second half continued in much the same vein, with
both debutants searching for the goal that would
make the perfect start to their Utrecht Sevens
campaigns. As the game opened up, it was Dream
Team who found the decisive breakthrough. Once
again, Mateusz Panko was the hero, grabbing his
second goal of the match to restore the Polish
side's advantage. From there, Dream Team defended
resolutely to protect their lead and successfully
saw out the closing stages to record a hard-earned
2–1 victory. It proved to be an excellent start
for Dream Team, who collected the first three
points of their campaign and immediately placed
themselves among the early pace-setters in Group
A. Panini Boys, meanwhile, could take plenty of
encouragement from a spirited debut performance
despite the defeat. They showed character to fight
back before half-time and demonstrated enough
quality to suggest they would be more than capable
of challenging as the group stage progressed.

The
second match in Group A pitted one of the most
experienced teams in eurofootballfives.com history
against one of the newest. Southgate County, a
team whose tournament journey stretches all the
way back to 2015 and has taken them to events
across Europe, began another chapter in their
long story. Standing opposite them were Dutch
debutants Billareal, eager to make their own mark
on the competition and show they belonged on this
stage from the very beginning.
The
opening half was a tight and tactical affair,
with neither side prepared to give much away.
Southgate County's experience was evident as they
kept their shape and controlled possession in
spells, while Billareal matched them for effort
and organisation. Chances were at a premium, and
both defences stood firm throughout a competitive
first period. As a result, the teams went into
the break locked together at 0-0.
With
the game finely balanced, it always felt like
one moment of quality might be enough to decide
it. That moment arrived in the second half when
Ben Duthler found the breakthrough for Billareal.
His goal sparked celebrations among the Dutch
side and gave them something valuable to protect.
Southgate County pushed for an equaliser as the
clock ticked down, but Billareal defended resolutely
and showed tremendous composure to preserve their
slender advantage and secure a memorable 1-0 victory.
For
Billareal, it was a dream start to life in eurofootballfives.com
competition. To defeat a team with the pedigree
and experience of Southgate County in their opening
fixture was an impressive statement of intent
and earned them three valuable points in Group
A. Southgate County, meanwhile, suffered an opening-game
setback but will know better than most that tournaments
are not won or lost in the first game.

The
third match in Group A saw Young Stars of Romania
get their 2026 Utrecht Sevens campaign underway
against a Dream Team side from Poland that had
already collected three points thanks to their
impressive 2–1 victory over Panini Boys. Young
Stars arrived with a growing reputation, having
enjoyed a dream debut season in eurofootballfives.com
competition by lifting the 2025 Amsterdam Sixes
title. Their opponents, meanwhile, were equally
determined to prove their opening victory was
no fluke and that they could challenge one of
the tournament favourites.
The
opening period fully lived up to expectations,
with both sides displaying plenty of quality but
refusing to give each other any clear opportunities.
Dream Team defended with discipline and looked
dangerous whenever they broke forward, while Young
Stars controlled possession for long spells without
finding a way through. It was a tactical battle
as much as a technical one, and neither goalkeeper
was beaten as the teams headed into the interval
locked at 0–0.
As
the second half progressed, the contest remained
finely balanced, but champions often possess the
ability to produce a decisive moment when it matters
most. That moment arrived courtesy of Madalin
Stoleriu, who broke the deadlock with a composed
finish to give Young Stars the lead. It proved
to be the only goal of the match, as the Romanian
side defended their advantage superbly during
the closing stages to seal a hard-fought 1–0 victory
over a resilient Polish outfit.
It
was the perfect start for Young Stars, whose title
defence was now officially underway with three
valuable points. The narrow victory showed they
were prepared to win the hard way when required,
a hallmark of championship-winning teams. Dream
Team, meanwhile, could take plenty of encouragement
despite the defeat. Having already beaten Panini
Boys and then pushed last year's Amsterdam Sixes
champions all the way before losing by a single
goal, they had demonstrated they would be a formidable
opponent for every team in Group A as the battle
for qualification continued.

The
fourth match in Group A brought together two teams
eager to bounce back from narrow opening game
defeats as Panini Boys of the Netherlands faced
England's Southgate County. There had been little
to separate either side in their first outings,
with Panini Boys edged out 2–1 by Dream Team and
Southgate County suffering a 1–0 defeat to Billareal.
Victory here would not only get their first points
on the board but, in an incredibly tight group,
would also lift the winners into a share of top
spot.
The
pattern of Group A continued as another fiercely
competitive first half unfolded. Defences remained
on top, with both teams cancelling each other
out through disciplined organisation and hard
work. Chances were few and far between, and neither
side was able to find the breakthrough before
the interval. Remarkably, this was the fourth
consecutive Group A match to be level at half-time,
underlining just how evenly matched the teams
were in the opening stages of the tournament.
The
deadlock was finally broken after the restart,
and it was Southgate County's experience that
ultimately made the difference. Simon Hicks rose
to the occasion when his team needed him most,
finding the decisive goal that settled the contest.
With the advantage in hand, the English side managed
the closing stages expertly, frustrating Panini
Boys' attempts to find an equaliser and holding
firm to secure a hard-earned 1–0 victory.
The
result breathed new life into Southgate County's
campaign, earning them their first three points
and moving them up level with the early group
leaders alongside several other teams in what
was proving to be an exceptionally competitive
section. For Panini Boys, it was further frustration,
with a second narrow defeat leaving them still
searching for their first points. However, having
been competitive in both of their matches, they
remained firmly in contention with plenty of football
still to be played in Group A.

The
final match before Group A reached its halfway
stage saw Billareal take on Young Stars of Romania
in a meeting between two teams with perfect starts
to the tournament. Alongside Southgate County
and Dream Team, they were part of a four-way tie
at the top of the standings on three points, but
both sides had a game in hand (this game). That
made this an early top-of-the-table clash, with
the winners guaranteed to move three points clear
at the summit and take control of Group A.
Young
Stars quickly demonstrated why they arrived in
Utrecht as the reigning 2025 Amsterdam Sixes champions.
They produced a confident opening-half display
and were rewarded when Madalin Stoleriu found
the breakthrough to give the Romanians a 1–0 lead.
In a group where first-half deadlocks had become
the norm, it was a significant moment. Indeed,
Young Stars became the first team in Group A to
hold a half-time advantage, underlining just how
competitive and evenly balanced the opening fixtures
had been.
The
Romanian side continued to press after the restart,
and once again it was Stoleriu who delivered.
His second goal of the afternoon doubled the advantage
to 2–0, making Young Stars the first team in Group
A to establish a two-goal lead in a match. Billareal
refused to surrender, though, and set up a tense
finish when Your van Ingen reduced the deficit
to 2–1. The Dutch side pushed hard for a late
equaliser, but Young Stars remained composed,
defending resolutely to preserve their lead and
secure another impressive victory.
The
2–1 success meant Young Stars became the first
team in Group A to make it two wins from two,
opening up a three-point advantage at the top
of the standings and strengthening their early
credentials as one of the tournament favourites.
Billareal, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat
but could take encouragement from the way they
fought back after falling two goals behind. With
the group proving incredibly tight, there was
still everything to play for as the second half
of the group stage beckoned.
