So
who would claim the Wooden Spoon in the 2011 Budapest
Fives? This was only the fifth time we had run
such a competition and the roll call of winners
reads;
Moss
Deb FC, Portgugal – 2009 Algarve Open
Milton
FC, Portugal - 2010 Algarve Open
Dot
Cotton's Flaps, Ireland – 2010 Prague Masters
Warranty
Direct FC, England – 2010 Valencia Fives
Would
it be a second England or a first Sweden win that
would be added to this list?
Whiteley
VII will have painful memories of the 2010 Algarve
Open when they lost the Wooden Spoon final to
Milton FC. Emlyn Hughes will have even more painful
memories as a clash of heads led to a face full
of blood and a hospital visit. Thank goodness
for our on site medical staff – we hope they would
not be needed in this final and indeed they were
not.
Both
teams had just secured their first win of the
day and a second now would secure glory and ensure
the wooden trophy would be heading back home in
their luggage. It was as if Whiteley FC were spurred
on by last year's defeat as they came out like
a team possessed. A Magyar Pekseg must have wondered
what hit them as Whiteley FC scored 5 goals in
the first half. Even a goal from Johan Persson
only temporarily stemmed the flow. The result
was effectively decided but there was still time
for another goal to put the icing on a 6-1 cake.
The hat-trick hero of the game was Jake Alford
who moved onto 6 for the tournament. There was
also a goal for Whiteley VII's own Scandanavian
Glenn Hillstrom with his third of the day. Our
commiserations go to A Magyar Pekseg and we hope
this is their first tournament of many and they
are the pioneers for more Swedish teams in eurofootballfives.com
tournaments.
