The
second Semi-Final saw Urbansport Coll versus Very
Old Salesians B as Spain met England.
Urbansport
Coll and Very Old Salesians B met in the second
Plate semi-final. Urbansport Coll would start
favourites with just the one defeat and one goal
conceded in the group phase. They had only scored
three times which had prevented them playing Cup
football. Very Old Salesians B were the higher
scoring team (6 goals) but defensively they had
been more vulnerable with 14 conceded. It was
the Spanish side, Urbansport Coll, began the stronger
of the two and looked to assert control early
on, while Old Salesians were more measured in
their approach, gradually working their way into
the contest.
The
breakthrough came in the first half when Oscar
Nero-Oriana put Urbansport Coll ahead, giving
them a 1–0 lead at the interval. It was a competitive
half overall, with chances at both ends, but the
Spanish side were slightly more clinical in the
decisive moments and went into the break with
the advantage.
Very
Old Salesians B had their work cut out in the
second period as they had to score against the
joint meanest defence in the tournament to date.
They responded well after halftime, increasing
their attacking intent and eventually found an
equaliser through Steve Robbens. That goal levelled
the contest at 1–1 and ensured a tense finish,
with neither side able to find a winner in normal
time despite both pushing for a decisive breakthrough.
With
the match ending level, the semi-final went to
penalties, where Very Old Salesians B held their
nerve to secure a 4–3 shootout victory. It was
a dramatic conclusion that sent the English side
through to the Plate final, while Urbansport Coll
were left to reflect on what might have been with
a narrow defeat after another closely fought encounter.
