It was Cup Final time in Mallorca! After 56 games of football in the Veterans section we came down to the most important of them all. Game 57, the match that would determine the 2023 Mallorca Veterans Tournament champions.

The roll of honour for previous champions in our Summer Veterans read:

2013: Sao Marcos (Por)

2014: Palmesanos (Spa)

2015: Mini FC (Por)

2016: Sago (Por)

2017: FC Mahou (Eng)

2018: Mini FC (Por)

2019: Esparta (Spa)

2022: FC Mahou (Eng)

Would we have our third Spanish champions or our first Moldovan winners added to that list? This is how we lined-up:

Duktil Balear (Spa)

Best appearance to date: Debut

Record today: Played 6, Won 5, Drawn 1, Lost 0.

Goal difference today: 29-11

Current unbeaten run: 6 games.

Today's top goalscorer: David Soler Hibernon (10)

Clean sheets: 2

FC Poloboc (Mda)

Best appearance to date: Debut

Record today: Played 6, Won 4, Drawn 2, Lost 0.

Goal difference today: 14-6

Current unbeaten run: 6 games.

Today's top goalscorer: Andriau Cucovei (4)

Clean sheets: 2

Both teams were unbeaten today and looking at their records you would think that an open high-scoring game would suit Duktil Balear as they had scored 29 goals in their 6 games and had the tournament's top marksman in David Soler Hibernon. They also had Daniel Suarez Rordan (6), Victor Mato Suero (5) and Javier Martinez Leon (4) amongst the goals.

If the game was a tight defensive contest you would probably fancy FC Poloboc as they had the best defensive record with just 6 conceded today. The game itself was played with a great atmosphere as the other teams all assembled pitch-side to watch the show-piece game of the day. They were to witness a high quality contest between two very technically gifted teams.

We reached half-time level at 0-0 which was only the second time in 13 halves of football today that Duktil Balear had failed to score. If FC Poloboc could keep the game tight and find a goal at the other end they would be celebrating victory tonight. It looked like a penalty shoot-out may well be on the cards too – that was no real indicator of who was going to win as both teams looked very good at penalties in their Quarter-Final victories.

As the second half progressed we did get a breakthrough. The crucial goal was scored by Enrique Minojosa Garcia – an unusual source for the Spanish with just his second of the day but certainly his most important. Not only did it give them a lead but it allowed Duktil Balear to play on the counter and they looked very dangerous. When Victor Mato Suero scored his sixth of the day to make it 2-0 it looked like a hammer blow to FC Poloboc. It was a blow from which they could not recover as Duktil Balear saw out the game to claim the coveted golden trophy.

Our sincere commiserations to FC Poloboc who had come so close to glory but just missed out. It was a superb day's play for them but it was just not meant to be though.

Our congratulations go to Duktil Balear on their debut eurofootballfives.com victory. It could be the first of many!
