AFC Blue Boys were the early pace-setters in Group B and they would kick us off next against Peebles All Stars.

The Polish team were playing for the first time at Veterans level in our events but came into the tournament on form after a good show at the 2022 Barcelona Fives. It was their second unbeaten group phase in our events and their first group win taking 13 points from a possible 15. They chalked up wins against Argon'ze of France (2-1), TBC FC (3-1), W London (1-0) and most impressively 4-1 against the defending champions, Club Esportiu Llefia. Only a 0-0 draw against Toe Punters prevented their 100% record. In the Quarter-Finals they drew 1-1 with 2008 champions Rapid Bosco Navas eventually winning on penalties. The Semi-Finals saw them miss out on the Cup Final as they went down 2-1 to FC Yol.

Two wins out of two gave them a 3 point lead at the top and they could make that a 6 point lead with a third victory on the bounce and almost guarantee Cup qualification. They were playing like a team growing with confidence and they raced into a 4-0 lead with first half goals from Daniel Kuty, Marcin Zaluga, Pawel Krasny and Marcin Zaluga again.

There was no let up in the second half as AFC Blue Boys were on the goal trail again. Artur Sukiennik kept up his record of scoring in every game so far to make it 5-0 before Sebastian Maly made it six, Marcin Zaluga completed his hat-trick and Jaroslaw Skowronski made it 8-0.

AFC Blue Boys were flying high! Top of the table and a 6 point cushion.

Ruta Uno FC entered Group B, Game 7 as one of three teams locked on three points. The next few games in the group would prove crucial in deciding which of those teams made the Cup and which of those teams made the Plate. For Ruta Uno FC, with a game against FC Mahou to come, you felt this was a must win match.

Their opponents were The Maulers who came into the game off the backs of 1-0 and 4-0 defeats. They had AFC Blue Boys (and their 100% record) to come so they really needed to produce a result in this game in their bid to reach the Plate and avoid the Wooden Spoon. The match was perfectly set-up, let the games begin…..

Ruta Uno FC struck first with Dan Bethell scoring for the second game on the bounce. The Maulers hit back though with Mark Brooksby scoring his team's first of the day. At 1-1 it was game on and that's how it stayed until half-time. In the second half it was Dan Bethell who restored the Welsh lead but they were unable to shake off their opponents and The Maulers hit back for a second time with Melvin Witt making it 2-2.

The game finished at 2-2 which saw Ruta Uno FC move into second place but FC Mahou below them had a game in hand. The Maulers had a point on the board and their destiny in their own hands. For each of these teams, in the context of the group, only time would tell if this was a point gained or two points dropped.

Up next was FC Mahou playing their third game against Peebles All Stars playing their final group game. As things stood, FC Mahou were just a point behind the Cup qualification places and could go second with victory here. Peebles All Stars were currently level on points with their illustrious opponents and could go second themselves with victory.

FC Mahou (Eng) were competing in the Veterans Tournament for a fifth time and looking to be the first team to win 3 Veterans titles in our events. After a slow start they were growing into the form that saw them on a hugely successful mission to Mallorca in 2017. There was no question they were worthy winners with 7 wins out of 7 as they roared to the title. They scored 30 goals and conceded just 2 along the way.

Peebles All Stars could see why as FC Mahou raced to a 4-0 lead. Steve Sachro was the man on fire in the first half as he scored all 4 goals – it took his tally to the day to 6 and, as things stood, was just two goals behind top scorer Hibernon of Duktil Balear. Goal difference could potentially be important in Group B and FC Mahou were trying to ensure they would have no worries in that department as they showed no mercy in the second half.

Matt Nicholls scored his second in as many games to make it 5-0. Pete Cox of FC Mahou scored 10 goals in 7 games in 2017 to become tournament top scorer and he scored his first goals of the day to make it 6-0 and 8-0. Mike Brandon also bagged a brace with the 7th and 9th .

FC Mahou were looking ominous….

AFC Blue Boys had just seen their lead at the top of the table reduced from 6 points to 5 (after Ruta Uno FC's draw) and then to 3 points following FC Mahou's demolition of Peebles All Stars. Those results meant AFC Blue Boys had guaranteed Cup qualification with a game to spare and needed just a point to win the Group A title.

The Maulers had just picked up their first point after twice coming from behind against Ruta Uno Fc. They needed a win to climb above Peebles All Stars to qualify for the Plate. Anything less and they would be in the Wooden Spoon .

It was a fantastic start for The Maulers who took the lead for the first time today. Mark Brooksby scored for the second game in a row to give the English team the lead. AFC Blue Boys had come from behind once today and they were to do so for a second time. They had Tomasz Sieradzan to thank as he first of all equalised and then scored again to make it 2-1.

The second half kicked off with AFC Blue Boys a goal to the good and the next goal of the game would be vital. It was Artur Sukiennik who claimed it as he kept up his record of scoring in every game. He also went on to make it 4-1 as he took his tournament tally to 7 goals and he was riding high in the personal goal-scoring charts (just 2 behind Hibernon of Duktil Balear).

Final score 4-1. AFC Blue Boys had sealed Cup qualification with a 100% record. Many congratulations to them.

We went into Game 10 of Group B with Ruta Uno FC due to host FC Mahou. The English team sat 2 points ahead of their opponents at kick-off. Let's have a look at what was at stake for the two teams going into this encounter:

Ruta Uno FC: They could finish no worse than third place with a defeat or draw that would see them into a Plate. A win would see them leapfrog their opponents into second place and claim a place in the Cup.

FC Mahou: They had the luxury of knowing they just needed to avoid defeat to reach the Cup in second position. Prior to the tournament, FC Mahou missing out on the Cup would have been unthinkable but a defeat would see exactly that.

Coming into the game the form looked like FC Mahou would be favourites and not just because of their historical record in these events. They had just seen off Peebles All Stars 9-0 whilst Ruta Uno FC had drawn 2-2 with the team at the foot of the table. However, it was Ruta Uno FC who took the lead – but it almost didn't happen. Elliott Batte struck at the near post but the referee gave a goal kick thinking the ball had burst the side netting. Ruta Uno FC had been filming the game and showed the referee the footage that proved the ball travelled inside the post. Fair play to the referee on this occasion who reversed his decision in what may go down as our first VAR referral.

The pressure was now on FC Mahou as they were heading out of the Cup as things stood but time was still on their side. Steve Sachro was firing in front of goal today and his seventh of the tournament ensured FC Mahou would change ends level at 1-1.

The game remained on a knife edge through the second half with the scores remaining at 1-1. Ultimately FC Mahou saw the game out and they were through to the Cup but Ruta Uno FC had certainly run them close. With performances like this they were sure to be a threat in the Plate competition.
