The
draw for the quarter final of the Cup was shaping
up nicely with 4 teams on 100% records and some
strong 2 nd place sides performing well and all
capable of defeating their table-topping opposition.
Quarter
Final 1 saw Red Star Rickerbys take on DHL Prague
(the 1-0 specialists). The teams were well matched
and this always looked like being a close game.
That is exactly what it proved to be. Red Star
Rickerbys, who had yet to concede chose the worst
time possible to put in a relatively poor (compared
to their own previous high standards) defensive
display. DHL Prague took full advantage. At 2-0
down, Red Star Rickerbys had given themselves
too much to do and a goal from Craig Bryant would
be in vain. Bryant would score Red Star's first
and final goal of the tournament as the game finished
2-1. DHL Prague were the first team through to
the Cup Semi Final.
Who
would meet them though? Dogshead FC and We Are
Messi would battle it out. Dogshead went into
the game as favourites with 4 wins out of 4. It
was a shock then when We Are Messi took the lead
through their top scorer Chris Pye. The first
goal was crucial and gave something for We Are
Messi to cling on to. A hard fought display was
not quite good enough and Dogshead pulled level
to take the game into sudden death extra time.
The teams could still not be separated. With Captains
beginning to think of their penalty takers, up
stepped Chris Pye to score his 2 nd and send We
Are Messi into the Semi Final. Sadly Dogshead
FC's participation was over - there were many
who thought they would go onto win the whole tournament.
We Are Messi emerged victorious in what was to
be considered the shock of the round.
In
the other half of the draw AMG had the most comfortable
tie of the round seeing off John Barnes FC. The
result was a comfortable one and the final 4-1
score was arguably justified. Rickard Worr all
but secured the top goalscorer award with his
2 nd hat trick of the day. He was now on 10 for
the tournament.
Southampton
Muppets, having been unlucky to draw Dogshead
FC in their group now met the ‘on fire' AFK Druhaci.
Southampton Muppets were not to let themselves
down though and put in a brave performance. AFK
Drhaci taking the game by the narrowest of margins
1-0. Marek Kropelnicky with his 5 th of the day
was enough to split the teams. |
