Group
D saw a straight shoot out between 2 Czech teams
(AFK Druhaci and FC Dropa) and 2 UK teams (Yorvik
Blades and We Are Messi). The draw meant the two
opening fixtures were played simultaneously and
both saw Anglo-Czech ties.
On
picth A, AFK Druhaci wasted no time in seeing
off We Are Messi by a convincing scoreline of
4-0. The game also saw the remarkable feat of
Marek Kropelnicky scoring all 4! A feat later
matched by Richard Worr of AMG (as you may have
seen from reading the Group B report!)
Pitch
B witnessed a much tighter affair between Yorvik
Blades and FC Dropa. Matt Wilson scoring Yorvik
Blades first of the tournament but FC Dropa hit
back with goals from Jiri Kvrek. And then what
proved to be the winner from David Hrvska. FC
Dropa made it a Czech double emerging victorious.
The
3 rd game of the group saw the two UK sides meet
with both teams searching for their first points
of the day. We Are Messi were like a different
team quickly putting their 4-0 defeat at AFK Druhaci
behind them to score 4 goals of their own against
Yorvik Blades. Yorvik Blades now looked destined
for the Plate. We Are Messi's win gave them a
real chance of making the Cup. Goals from Chris
Pye (2) and Graham Dillon (2) doing the damage.
Scott Manford scored the Yorvik Blades goal.
The
all Czech encounter of FC Dropa and AFK Druhaci
saw the latter continue their imperious form and
notched up their second comfortable win (3-0)
in 2 games. All eyes were on Marek Kropelnicky
but he could not add to his tally. A double from
Tomas Hruby put AFK in control with Ludek Bruckner
finishing the job. AFK Druhaci sat pretty at the
top of Group D with 6 points, 7 goals scored and
none conceded.
The
final games kicked off simultaneously with We
Are Messi and FC Dropa in a straight fight for
2 nd place and a chance to take their place in
the Cup. A fight it proved to be. Whilst nothing
unsavoury occurred there was clear tension bubbling
below the surface. In a tense and niggly affair
the extra experience, might and power of We Are
Messi saw off the young FC Dropa side 2 (Pye/Dillon)-1(Hrvska)
to finish 2 nd in the group.
In
the other game AFK continued their 100% record
with a 1-0 win over Yorvik Blades. The game saw
one of the most remarkable goals of the tournament.
Yours truly only started watching the game with
a couple of minutes to go but chose to watch the
game at just the right time. A flowing move of
16-20 passes (we lost count!) was finished off
in style by none other than AFK ‘Keeper, Jiri
Repka, with a sweet left foot drive. All AFK players
were in the Yorvik Blades half. With such a cavalier
attitude we turned to a spectator assuming a landslide
and asked “How many's that?” 1-0 was the answer
that came back. We assumed the game must be in
the bag at this stage but this was an incredible
attitude at 0-0. AFK deserved their 3 points with
such attacking flair. Yorvik Blades must wonder
how they finished this group with no points. Plucky
performances against FC Dropa and one of the tournament
favourites AFK Druhaci, only saw narrow defeats.
News
then rocked the Prague Trophy that FC Dropa were
retiring from the competition after picking up
a couple of injuries and they would be unable
to fulfil their fixtures in the Plate. As a result
Yorvik Blades were promoted to 3 rd place. |
