Group
C was rocked by news 2 days before the event that
Slepi Kone, (Runners up at the 2007 Prague Masters)
had to withdraw due to illness that had swept
amongst the Slepi Kone side. Rumours that Slepi
Kone had employed the former Tottenham Hotspur
chef have been unconfirmed!!
The
withdrawal of such a quality side could only help
the other Group C teams - Dogshead FC, Southampton
Muppets and Brazil United. Teams in this group
would play each other twice to compensate for
the lack of a 4 th team.
Dogshead
FC, who would play back-to-back, quickly swept
to the top of the group on 6 points beating Southampton
Muppets and then Brazil United, both by scores
of 3-0. Luke Bramner, the key player for Dogshead
FC with 3 goals in 2 games. It already emerged
that Southampton Muppets and Brazil United would
be fighting for 2 nd place and qualification for
the Cup.
All
eyes were then on pitch A, as the 2 sides met
in the first of their encounters. It's not often
you can say this but Southampton beat Brazil 3-1
and took the initiative for 2 nd place. Kevin
Connolly the Brazil United scorer whilst Pete
Snelling and Paul Edwards (x2) notched for the
Muppets.
The
two teams would meet again in the next game. They
would meet in “The Cage!!” This game proved a
much closer affair with Marc McHale of Southampton
Muppets scoring the only goal. Southampton Muppets
joined Dogshead at the top of the league on 6
points albeit having played one game more with
the teams due to meet in the final game of the
group.
Dogshead
FC had their game in hand at the top against Brazil
United. The game went to form and Dogshead raced
into a 2-0 lead. Then, Kevin Connolly brought
the score back to 2-1 but Dogshead powered away
again with three further goals meaning the result
was never really in doubt. Brazil United were
now confined to 3 rd and a place in the Plate.
With
Southampton Muppets and Dogshead both already
qualified for the Cup the only matter left to
decide would be who would have the glory of topping
the group and earning a preferential tie in the
Quarter Final draw.
Southampton
Muppets needed to win by 6-0 to top the group
due to Dogshead's vastly superior goal difference.
Those hopes quickly went out of the window though
as Dogshead FC swept aside their challengers with
a 4-0 victory. They finished as clear group winners
and many believed them to be one of the favourites
to go on and win the entire tournament. Luke Brammer
scored twice to take his tally for the tournament
to 6 goals. This left him only one behind current
top scorer Richard Worr of AMG. |
