The
Cup Quarter-Finals had produced a strong line-up
with Dutch sides Jays Carconect and SV Amstelland
both winning their groups and looking like contenders
whilst Over Crusaders II boasted a 100% record
and Stag & Co were rampant after a first game
defeat. Joining them were the runners-up Olympic
Phil Babb, Whiteley FC, Comets Sports Club and
UK Football Finder who were all good sides and,
it was fair to say, there were no weak links.
Picking
a winner from the above line-up was near impossible
but SV Amstelland had to be one of the favourites
with 3 wins out of 3. The Dutch team would find
Olympic Phil Babb standing in their way for a
place in the semi-finals. The English team were
to prove formidable opposition and SV Amstelland
did not realise what had hit them. Try as they
may they found themselves outplayed by the English
side and while they did get on the scoresheet
their goal was to prove a consolation. Olympic
Phil Babb were on fire and won convincingly. Alex
Woolston scored two to take his tally to 5 for
the competition, Chris Mills scored a double and
Joe Willie scored his first of the competition
to complete a 5-1 win. A great win and a message
sent out to the other teams.
The
other Dutch team, Jays Carconect had scored goals
for fun in the group stage and were the last hope
now for Holland following the demise of SV Amstelland
United. They continued to score goals but they
also leaked goals too. Jays Carconect were finding
that Whiteley FC were not allowing them to play
the football they wanted to and a tough encounter
which was fiercely contested all the way through
finished 4-4 at the end of normal time.
With
the scores level the match would move into golden
goal extra time. No sooner had the game re-started
when it was over. Quick as a flash Aidan Wood
in a magic moment not only bagged his second hat-trick
of the tournament but scored the golden goal and
Whiteley FC marched through to the semi-finals.
Dutch involvement in the Cup competition was now
over.
We
mentioned at the start of this section how strong
the teams in the Cup Quarter-Finals were. As if
to prove a point then we had a second game go
into golden goal extra time. This time it was
Over Crusaders II and UK Football Finder who could
not be separated at the final whistle. As with
the previous quarter-final the scores were tied
at 4 goals each. Once again the golden goal extra
time did not take long as you may expect in a
tournament with so many goals.
The
golden goal is always a tough way to go out because
the end is so sudden and in this game it was UK
Football Finder who had their dreams ended. Over
Crusaders II the scorers of the vital 9 th goal
and a place in the semi-final against Olympic
Phil Babb awaited them.
Last
but not least was the game between Stag &
Co and Comets Sports Club. Yet again we were treated
to an evenly matched game with goals a plenty.
It looked odds on at one stage we were destined
for another game to go into extra time. When the
final whistle went in this fixture we did have
a winner but only by the odd goal. There were
an incredible 11 goals scored in this game and
Stag & Co edged out Comets Sports Club 6-5.
The Stag & Co goalscorers list looking like
a Dentist supplies order form with braces for
Mark Goddard, Mark Sams and Chris Connolly securing
the win.
The
semi-final line-up was now complete.
