There
was a real sense of occasion around this second
Cup semi-final as Dee Rangers and Stiftung Wadentest
renewed “hostilities” in an England v Germany
Semi-Final contest that inevitably brought back
memories of the 1990 World Cup. With just two
points separating the teams after the group
phase, there was almost nothing to choose between
them. Both had finished on 10 points, with Dee
Rangers taking second place on goal difference
at +6 compared with Stiftung's +5. The earlier
meeting between the two sides had gone the Germans'
way, a 3-1 victory that represented Dee Rangers'
only defeat of the day. With so little separating
the teams, the obvious question was whether
we might need another chapter in the penalty-shootout
history between England and Germany.
Stiftung
Wadentest made the stronger start and struck
first through Korbinian Blochl, who found the
net for his fourth goal of the tournament. The
Germans looked like they could be the kryptonite
for Dee Rangers as Stiftung Wadentest looked
capable of completing another victory over the
English side. Dee Rangers battled to stay within
touching distance, but Stiftung's advantage
remained intact through the remainder of the
opening period and they went into the break
1-0 ahead. With a place in the Cup final at
stake, Dee Rangers had to find a 2 nd half response.
That
response arrived after the interval, and it
came from Jonah Jones. The Dee Rangers forward
scored his second goal of the tournament to
bring the semi-final level at 1-1 and completely
change the mood of the contest. Suddenly the
momentum was with the English side, who sensed
that their route to the final was still very
much alive. They continued to push forward and
were rewarded again when Drew Fowlie found the
breakthrough, scoring his fourth goal of the
tournament to put Dee Rangers 2-1 ahead. Stiftung
Wadentest now needed an answer of their own,
but Dee Rangers defended their advantage with
everything they had.
The
final whistle confirmed a remarkable turnaround
and sent Dee Rangers through to the Cup final
after a heroic 2-1 comeback. For Stiftung Wadentest,
there was heartbreak, but also enormous credit
for an outstanding European debut. They were
genuinely good enough to win the tournament
and have made a huge impression in their first
appearance, proving themselves a fantastic addition
to the tournament scene. For Dee Rangers, meanwhile,
a place in the final awaits after overcoming
the one opponent who had beaten them earlier
in the day — and doing so in the most dramatic
way possible.
