Round
5 and the final round before the lunch break.
The games coming up now were important to send
you into the break on a high before the final
onslaught and run-in for rounds 6 & 7 after
lunch.
This
was especially important for BA Speedbirds as
not only were points at stake but so were bragging
rights as BA Speedbirds 1 met BA Speedbirds 2.
The form book suggested the first team would have
the upper hand but playing against your own club
is never easy as Team Amman A would testify following
their narrow victory (according to the scoreline)
against Team Amman B.
If
the derby rivalry wasn't enough both teams needed
the points. A win for BA Speedbirds 1 would pretty
much secure their qualification to the prestigious
Cup competition and give them a chance of jumping
up to second in the table. BA Speedbirds 2 on
the other hand knew that a victory would give
their Cup qualification hopes a huge boost whereas
a defeat would probably mean the Plate. The formbook
and selection policy of the BA Speedbirds management
was proven correct though as the first team won
by the odd goal in three. Char Bungaroo scoring
the decisive goal following goals by Lou Dutton
(BA Speedbirds 1) and Karen Gibson (BA Speedbirds
2). 2-1 the final score.
Next
up was a crucial fixture in the overall group.
Team Amman A currently held 4 th place and the
final Cup qualification place going into the game
against Liverpool Feds who were placed in 5 th
and their closest rivals to progress. At this
stage it looked like a straight fight between
these two for qualification. It was Liverpool
Feds who stepped up to the plate when it counted
to put aside two consecutive defeats and claim
their second win of the competition. They proved
to strong for Team Amman A who despite a goal
from Katrina Glusac could not hold off their opponents.
Goals from Danielle Higgins, Jemma Parr and Karen
Quinn secured the 3-1 victory. Team Amman A had
to relinquish 4 th to Liverpool Feds. Momentum
had swung.
Liverpool
Feds were back on in the final game before lunch
against Camden Town Ladies to see if they could
continue this momentum. A win for them would give
them a 5 point lead over Team Amman A and would
prove a psychological killer. They were not able
to achieve this goal.
Stood
in their way were the formidable opponents of
Camden Town Ladies who were looking to bounce
back after their defeat to Liverpool Feds. The
two Camden Town goal machines of Carmel Clinton
and Mary Guest helped them do just that with a
goal a piece which outgunned the strike of Jemma
Parr for the Liverpool Feds for a 2-1 victory.
The
result saw Camden Town Ladies go joint-top with
Liverbirds FC, second on goal difference but with
their opponents having a game in hand. The defeat
for Liverpool Feds kept the battle for 4 th place
alive. |
