The elite eight became
the final four as the 2008 Barca Fives reached
the Cup semi-final stage. First up was the Yorvik
Blades against Rapid
Bosco Navas. In most of our tournaments
it is the forwards who grab the headlines with
their goalscoring exploits but in this tournament
one of the main headline grabbers was the Yorvik
Blades keeper Tom Edwards who had kept 5 consecutive
clean sheets to date - a record number in eurofootballfives.com
competition.
The
Rapid Bosco Navas forwards had scored 9 goals
in their 5 games so far and their forwards would
have to be at their sharpest in this game to
penetrate the Yorvik Blades back line. The game,
as you may imagine, was a close one and there
would be just one strike needed to settle it.
The strike came from Juan Martinez Prieto as
the Yorvik Blades resistence was eventually
breached. Rapid Bosco Navas through to the final
1-0. This was particularly harsh on the Yorvik
Blades who had only conceded one goal all tournament.
A great tournament for them and if they were
able to produce a few more goals going forward
we are sure there is potential silverware for
them at future tournaments.
Red
Light Runners of Scotland and Uxama of Spain
would battle it out for the right to contest
the final with Rapid Bosco Navas. Red Light
Runners had jumped out of the traps at a frightening
pace winning their opening three games 7-0,
6-1 and 11-0. Their last two games they had
been made to work hard, 2-1 v DHL Prague Red
and 1-0 versus Hanson Vets. This game would
be another stern test for the Red Light Runners
who were looking to make it a deadly dozen -
12 wins out of 12 in eurofootballfives.com competition
going back to April of this year. Uxama had
been on the wrong end of the aforementioned
6-1 scoreline in the group phase but they had
grown stronger since then and held the Scots
to 0-0 at half-time.
The
second half kicked off and it was Declan Doherty
of the Red Light Runners who broke the deadlock.
The lead did not last for long though as a ball
over the top caught last defender Alan Ritchie
the wrong side of the galloping Uxama forward.
He had no option but to pull him back and give
away a free-kick. This free-kick was thumped
in by Oscar Linde Alvarez low and hard into
the bottom left hand corner. At 1-1 the game
looked like it may go into extra time but a
fine move by the Red Light Runners including
slick one-touch passing was finished off by
Stephen Doherty. The goal proved decisive and
the Red Light Runners were through, 2-1, and
with it those 12 wins out of 12.
