42 games of competition
down and one to go - the 2008 Barca Fives Cup
Final. The game would be the last game of our
2008 season and decide the final silverware
of a fantastic season. The two teams taking
to the field to battle for the title were Rapid
Bosco Navas of Spain and Red
Light Runners of Scotland.
Rapid Bosco Navas finished 3rd in
the group and if they were to win it would be
the greatest comeback from a group finish to
win a title we had seen so far in our 11th tournament
to date. The Red Light Runners were looking
to maintain a 100% record and become the first
team to win two eurofootballfives.com titles.
Everything
was going to plan for the Red Light Runners
in the early stages keeping it tight at the
back and then going ahead through Declan Doherty.
With the tournament favourites going ahead it
looked like the destination of the trophy was
well on its way to being decided.
Rapid
Bosco Navas were not to be beaten though and,
just like the semi-finals, a Spanish team had
pegged them back to 1-1. The crucial equaliser
was scored by Jaume Camprubi Sannicolas. In
the semi-final, Red Light Runners were able
to put the disappointment of an equaliser behind
them and kick on to get the winner. In the final
though they were unable to repeat that feat
and it was Rapid Bosco Navas that kicked on
to score the 3rd goal of the game. The goal
was scored by Juan Martinez Prieto who scored
the winner in their semi-final against the Yorvik
Blades. He was to prove the hero again as this
goal proved to be the tournament winning goal.
It
was unlucky 13 for the Red Light Runners whose
12 game winning streak came to an end. There
was personal consolation for Stephen Doherty
though who finished as the tournament top goalscorer
with 11 goals in 7 games - a fine return.
Congratulations
to Rapid Bosco Navas who claimed the inaugural
Barca Fives title and became the first Spanish
winners of a eurofootballfives.com competition.
They say 2008 has been a great year for Spanish
sport with the likes of Spain winning Euro 2008,
Raphael Nadal becoming world tennis number 1
and now Rapid Bosco Navas winning the Barca
Fives - surely the icing on the cake to every
Spaniard. Well, maybe not, but still a great
achievement for the Rapid Bosco Navas squad.
We
would like to thank every team that competed
in the tournament and made it such a great success.
We look forward to seeing you all at one of
our tournaments in 2009 when we kick-off again
in Krakow on the 25th April.
