The
2008 Amsterdam Fives Final would be contested
by Olympic Phil Babb and Stag & Co. Both teams
had performed well to reach this stage in what
was a very strong competition.
Olympic
Phil Babb looked to have the edge having made
less work of their route to the Final and easing
to victories in the Quarters and Semis. Don't
write off Stag & Co though who came into the
final on the back of four successive victories.
The
game started with Olympic Phil Babb taking the
game to their opposition but it was not all one-way
traffic though as, defensively, they had to clear
one off the line. Stag & Co also had a series
of corners as they put pressure on the Olympic
Phil Babb goal. At one stage there were so many
successive corners it looked like the game would
go into extra time before the stalemate was broken.
Eventually
it was though and it was Olympic Phil Babb who
drew first blood through the familiar source of
Alex W oolston notching up number 11 of the tournament
for him. 1-0 became 2-0 through James Cooper and
Olympic Phil Babb were on their way.
Stag
& Co did not get to the final by giving up
though and they dug deep. Their efforts were rewarded
when Graeme Routledge's 5 th goal of the tournament
reduced the deficit to 2-1.
Stag
& Co could not sustain the comeback though
and Olympic Phil Babb kicked on to secure the
Amsterdam Fives title with further goals from
Martin Hink and Alex W oolston (finishing on 12
for the competition).
The
final scoreline of 4-1 resulted in Olympic Phil
Babb claiming the first ever Amsterdam Fives title
and a deserved victory for some fine performances.
They became the first team in eurofootballfives.com
history to finish second in their group and go
on to claim the overall title.*
