The Cup Quarter-Finals
saw four Czech teams and four English teams
square up to battle it out to become the 2008
Prague Trophy champions.
In
the first quarter-final, SK
Zelenec met Red
Star Rickerbys. SK Zelenec were looking
to make it to their second successive eurofootballfives.com
Cup semi-final. Red Star Rickerbys lost 2-1
to DHL Prague at the same stage last year and
were looking to go one step further this year.
They would find it tough against SK Zelenec
who came into the game with three wins out of
three. They made no mistake in making it four
wins out of four as they dominated from start
to finish. The game finished 5-1. The result
never looked in doubt and it was a shame for
Red Star Rickerbys who would have to settle
for another quarter-final finish. Red Star Rickerbys
have already mentioned they will be returning
next year and we look forward to seeing thier
challenge in the 2009 Prague Trophy.
The
second quarter-final saw East
meet West as
the two Germany
sides came face to face. These 'derby' games
are never easy when you are playing your "team-mates".
It is often difficult to raise the intensity
of the game but you need to be ruthless and
remember that for the duration of the game your
opposition are not your friends. It was East
Germany who were favourites going into the game
and they lived up to their favourites billing
by sweeping aside their friends from the West
with a comfortable margin of 3-0. Ben Craig
scored a double and Scott Croucher added to
his tournament goal tally.
The
third quarter-final saw the most emphatic victory
with Kehar Club
on the title trail once again. Having won the
2007 Prague Masters, you could see that Kehar
Club had the taste for victory again and it
was going to take a strong performance to stop
them on their charge. Michal Predikant did his
best for KBV
notching his 6th of the competition. Jan Sekerka
scored his third hat-trick of the tournament
with goals also from Jan Cihal, Lukas Ostry,
Petr Kaminski and Pavel Trminek securing a comprehensive
7-1 win.
DHL
Prague Blue and Premier
Medical met in the final quarter-final
and closest quarter-final. Having gone 108 games
without a 0-0 draw DHL Prague Red ended that
run with a goal-less draw against NHBC in the
group phase. In the knock-out phase their sister
team, DHL Prague Blue emulated the feat after
a further 23 games for 0-0 draw number two.
Two periods of Golden Goal extra time could
still not seperate the two teams and we had
our first penalty shoot-out of the tournament.
It
is often said that the penalty shoot-out creates
heroes and villains. There was no doubt who
the hero was in this penalty shoot-out. That
honour went to the Premier Medical goalkeeper,
Rupert Neal. He saved both penalties that DHL
Prague Blue threw at him. The penalties were
both well-struck and in the corner but both
times Neal stretched out to his right to push
the efforts away to safety. The Premier Medical
strikers fulfilled their part of the bargain
and sealed a 2-0 penalty shoot-out win. A semi-final
against Kehar Club was their reward.
