So,
the 2008 Barcelona Fives had now reached it's
climax after 26 games of thrilling action, the
challenge of seven teams had come to a conclusion
and it was BA Speedbirds 1 and Liverpool Feds
still standing to decide the winners of the 2008
Barcelona Fives.
The
final would see, for the first time in eurofootballfives.com
history, a game between the teams finishing 3
rd and 4 th in the Group Phase. We believe this
is testament to what a high quality tournament
and what a closely matched standard of teams we
saw contesting the 2008 Barcelona Fives.
Liverpool
Feds probably went into this match as very slight
favourites due to their astonishing victory over
Liverbirds FC in the semi-finals and the fact
they had a little extra rest before the game due
to the extra time played by BA Speedbirds 1. However,
it should be noted that BA Speedbirds ran out
1-0 winners in this fixture earlier in the day.
This final really was there for the taking for
either team.
In
a low-scoring but entertaining game the final
proved to be a very close contact. Liverpool Feds
had arguably the most of the attacking play and
put more pressure on their opponents defence.
This pressure was rewarded when Jade Hickey put
the Liverpool Feds ahead. Having won their previous
two games and proved they could turn the style
on when it mattered (against Team Amman A in the
group and Liverbirds FC in the semi-final) Liverpool
Feds were going to be tough to overhaul. BA Speedbirds
1 had their work cut out and ultimately it was
to prove one step too far as the Liverpool Feds
defence kept the required clean sheet to claim
a 1-0 victory and the title of 2008 Barcelona
Fives winners!
Our
congratulations to Liverpool Feds and commiserations
to BA Speedbirds 1. We also send our congratulations
out to Lucy Holmes of Liverbirds FC who won the
Golden Boot trophy scoring a fantastic 14 goals
in 7 games to finish tournament top goalscorer.
A
big thank you to all the teams who participated
in the tournament and ensured it was a great success
and made the eurofootballfives.com debut in Barcelona
such an enjoyable one.
The
eurofootballfives.com tour will certainly return
to Barcelona next year for the 2009 Barcelona
Fives. We hope you will be able to join us.
