DHL
Prague Red missed out on qualification
for the Cup on goal difference to their compatriots
DHL Prague Blue. Having finished third in their
group their compensation for missing out on
the Cup was a well earned rest and a bye through
to the Plate semi-finals. The teams finishing
4th and 5th in each group would face a quarter-final
tie to see if they had what it took to join
the Czech team in the final four of the Plate.
The first of these quarter-finals
was an all-Spanish encounter between the Q
Detectives and Barcelona
Adventure. Both teams had struggled in
the group stage but had showed glimpses of quality
in some games. In the knock-out stages it was
do or die time and they would need to find that
quality now. Both sides came into the game with
some injury worries picked up in the group phase
and in a sporting gesture from Barcelona Adventure,
the teams agreed to play 4-a-side to be fair
to the Q Detectives. Maybe it was only right
that this sporting gesture was rewarded with
victory. Barcelona Adventure picking up their
second consecutive win of the tournament and
earning a tie against DHL Prague Red in the
semi-finals. Goals from Cedryci, Olivier and
David sent them through as Raul's (no, not that
Raul) goal for the Q Detectives proved a mere
consolation.
Next
up was the Prisoners
versus Hanson Old Boys.
Hanson Old Boys had found it tough in the group
phase and the Plate was a chance for them to
forget about the morning's play and focus on
the Plate. In their way stood the Prisoners
who came into their own in the Plate phase of
the 2008 Prague Masters going on to collect
the trophy. The Plate competition of the 2008
Barca Fives appeared to be to their liking too
as they completed a comfortable 3-0 victory.
Cleyton Miranda the hero of the game with a
double strike adding to a captain's goal from
Vinny Patel. Hanson Old Boys were now out of
the tournament but qualified for an afternoon
in the bar and some well earned beers.
The
final place in the semi-finals would be contested
by the CSF and
3 Lions FC. Like the Prisoners, the CSF
were no strangers to the Plate competition and
can point to a runners-up spot in the 2007 Prague
Trophy and winning the 2008 Krakow Trophy Plate
competition just 7 months earlier. Would this
pedigree and experience hold them in good stead
against the 3 Lions FC? Sadly for them, not
on this occasion. Oz Zamora did get on the scoresheet
but it was not enough against the 3 Lions FC
who put in their best performance of the day.
The 3 Lions found the path to goal on no less
than four occasions through Michael Monaco,
Chris Baginsky (2) and Stacey Cross. The semi-finals
awaited the 3 Lions whilst CSF manager, Hitesh
Joshi, had to go and face the CSF board for
a dreaded vote of confidence.
