2008
Krakow Trophy champions, Red
Light Runners, began their campaign to
be the first team to win two eurofootballfives.com
tournaments against 3
Lions FC. 3 Lions FC were making their
debut and could not have had a tougher game to
start with – this was truly a baptism of fire.
Red Light Runners continued from where they left
off in Krakow and stormed to an easy 7-0 victory.
David O'Connell (2), Stephen Doherty (2) and Declan
Doherty (3) all getting their names on the score
sheet. Normal service resumed for the Scottish
team.
DHL
Prague Red, runners-up in the 2008 Prague
Trophy Plate, met eurofootballfives.com debutants
Hanson Old Boys
in their opening fixture. The Czech side into
their rhythm early as Adeogun Oluwatosin scored
their first of the tournament before goals from
Dan Findley and Stephen Parry completed a 3-0
win.
Hanson
Old Boys had the chance to bounce back
from their opening game defeat in the next Group
C fixture against Uxama
of Spain. The Old Boys found themselves
in a similar sticky position though as they again
conceded 3 without reply. Oscar Linde Alvarez,
Mario Rujo Camello and Algano Castrillo Baza sharing
the goals around. A tough task lay ahead for the
Hanson Old Boys in this group whilst Uxama were
looking forward to game two with three points
already in the bag.
When
we say ‘looking forward to game two' that was
probably before they looked at the fixture list
and realised they were playing Scotland 's Red
Light Runners. The Red
Light Runners made it 2 from 2 in Barcelona
and 8 from 8 overall in eurofootballfives.com
competition as they dismissed Uxama
with ease. Stephen Doherty bagging an incredible
5 goals plus Alan Ritchie 's first of the tournament
saw them cruise to a 6-1 win. Javier de Diego
with the consolation for Uxama.
DHL
Prague Red continued their solid start
in Group C with a 1-0 victory over 3
Lions FC. Rupert Baltrock scored the goal
that secured all three points whilst Ilia Kreys
in goal kept a second clean sheet. 3 Lions FC
still without a goal and a point in this group
although this was a much better showing as they
were slowly finding their feet in European competition.
The
third match for 3 Lions
FC proved third time lucky. Alex Mott scoring
the 3 Lions' first goal of the tournament before
Chris Dixon made sure of all three points with
a crucial second. They will have been pleased
to have broken their goalscoring and points duck.
This result though was at the expense of Hanson
Old Boys who had now lost three out of
three with the dubious honour of facing Red Light
Runners in the final game.
The
next game saw Uxama
of Spain with 3 points take on DHL
Prague Red of the Czech Republic with six
points, a 100% record and still to concede a goal.
Uxama blew that record out of the water and shattered
the Czech's defensive record. The Spanish were
on fire as they bounced back from 6-1 defeat in
their previous game to record a 6-2 win in this
game. Rupert Baltrock and Dan Findley scored for
DHL but a hat-trick from Algano Castrillo Baza,
a brace from Javier de Diego and a final goal
from Perran Mur Izquierdo meant the three points
would belong to the Spanish team.
Only
the brave would watch the next game as Hanson
Old Boys came up against Red
Light Runners. For the English to take
anything from this game would require a monumental
effort and if this was the FA Cup we would be
using clichés such as “David versus Goliath”
clash, this isn't the FA Cup, this is the Barca
Fives and as such we shall spare you the clichés.
The game went as you may have expected although
the final scoreline is a little harsh on the Hanson
Old Boys who put in a great effort but were ultimately
outgunned. Stephen Doherty (2), Declan Doherty
(4), Alan Ritchie (2) and Michael Clarkson (3)
helping themselves and boosting their personal
goal scoring records.
The
Red Light Runners
came into their final group game with 9 points
and a goal difference of plus 23. DHL
Prague Red had just had a hiccup against
Uxama so you would be forgiven for thinking this
would be a one-side game. Not a bit of it though
as the Czech team made Red Light Runners work
hard for victory and gave them a real run for
their money. The game finished 2-1 to Red Light
Runners but they knew they had been in a game
and captain Alan Ritchie heaped praise on DHL
Prague Red after the game. His goal and Stephen
Doherty's 10 th of the tournament saw them safely
home though. Dan Findlay with the goal for DHL
Prague Red.
The
result meant that DHL Prague Red finished 3rd
in their group and would have to compare their
record with the teams finishing 3rd in Groups
B and C. To their agony, they were edged out of
the Cup into the Plate by their compatriots, DHL
Prague Blue.
The
final game of the Group saw Uxama
and 3 Lions FC
come face-to-face both on the back of victories.
Uxama had proved the stronger side overall thus
far and so they proved it in this game with a
2-0 victory which saw them finish second in the
group. Algano Castrillo Baza and Javier de Diego
with the goals. 3 Lions FC could find no cutting
edge and failed to find the net. They would have
to settle for 4th place in Group C and they would
continue their tournament in the afternoon Plate
competition.
Cup:
Red Light Runners and Uxama.
Plate:
DHL Prague Red, 3 Lions FC and Hanson Old Boys.
