Round
5 started off on Pitch A with Man Utd predictably
defeating Arsenal. Man Utd did not have the whole
game their own way though and having seen how
Chelsea struggled to break-down the Arsenal back
line they knew they would not be in for an easy
ride. Man Utd found it a little easier than Chelsea
though largely due to the fact that they boasted
Jorge Correira in their ranks. A brace in this
fixture took his tournament tally to five to lead
the goal-scoring charts. A hat-trick eluded him
though although Man Utd did add a third through
Pedro Xavier. Then, the biggest moment for Arsenal
to cheer in the tournament so far as Andy Marshall
scored their first goal at the fifth time of asking.
A consolation was all it proved to be as Man Utd
ran out 3-1 winners to maintain their position
at the top.
Pitch
B saw second meet third as Chelsea took on Aston
Villa. The last time Aston Villa met Portuguese
opposition a close, feisty affair saw a late 1-0
winner for Man Utd. This time a close, feisty
affair saw a 1-0 late winner. Aston Villa were
on the right side of the result this time when
Mehbub Ahmed's late strike saw the first English
versus Portuguese win of the day and Aston Villa
leapfrog their rivals into second place, just
a point behind Man Utd.
The
next match on Pitch A saw 6th versus 7th with
both teams needing a result to keep their hopes
of qualification alive. Tottenham and Reading
were just two and three points respectively behind
Ipswich Town Elite in fourth place. Reading Royals,
buoyed by their second point of the tournament
against Ipswich last time out, scored the vital
opening goal through Sam Reeve. They then put
the game safe with a second through Andrew Marley,
his second of the competition. The win saw Reading
Royals claim their first victory of the tournament
and move on to 5 points. The team that were bottom
just two games ago now knew they would finish
round 5 no worse than 5th place.
The
final game of the round saw Liverpool meet Ipswich
Town Elite. This game saw the two teams most likely
to take 4th place come head-to-head and was a
must not lose game. This was particularly true
for Ipswich Town Elite who arguably had the tougher
run in. Liverpool came into this vital game on
the back of declining form and sadly for them
that's how it continued as Ipswich Town 's determined
spirit saw them win out 1-0 victors. The vital
goal scored by Michael Tricker – his first in
eurofootballfives.com history and what a time
to get it.
The
result meant that Ipswich Town now became favourites
for the final qualification place with a three
point cushion over Reading Royals. With two games
to go though nothing was certain.
