East
Germany and The
Cheeky Boys opened
Group B. East Germany arrived at the tournament
with some pedigree. 12 months ago (under the name
of Southampton Muppets) they narrowly lost 1-0
in the Cup Quarter-Finals to eventual champions
AFK Druhaci and were expected to challenge again
this year. The Cheeky Boys, making their debut,
had a daunting start and despite two goals from
Jack Walker found themselves on the wrong end
of a 4-2 scoreline. East Germany shared the goals
around (Scott Croucher, Paul Edwards, Michael
Chukwuma and Ben Craig) as they claimed their
first three points.
Red
Star Rickerbys also made the Cup Quarter-Finals
of the 2007 Prague Trophy when they fell to eventual
runners-up DHL Prague. In a strange twist of fate,
the fixture computer drew them against DHL
Prague Blue in their opening game of the
2008 tournament. There was a sense of deja vu
for Red Star Rickerbys as they could not enact
their revenge. A double from Leo Echeverria completed
a 2-0 win for the Czech team.
The
Lions Bar hold a disappointing record in
eurofootballfives.com competition finishing bottom
of their group in both the 2007 Prague Masters
and 2007 Prague Trophy with no wins and no goals
in nine matches. It would be a brave man to bet
on them against East Germany.
You would have been wise to keep your money in
your pocket as East Germany handed out a 9-0 lesson.
Again, the East German goals were shared around
- Paul Edwards (2), Scott Croucher (2), Ian Bishop
(2), Michael Chukwuma (2) and Alex Craig finding
the back of the net.
The
Cheeky Boys and Red
Star Rickerbys entered their second game
both looking to bounce back from first game defeats.
Jack Walker scored his third of the competition
and Rob Adams opened his account for The Cheeky
Boys. However, the goals were not to prove enough
as they found themselves on the wrong end of a
4-2 scoreline once again. Red Star Rickerbys first
three points of the group and their challenge
was now underway.
Game
5 of Group B saw the Lions
Bar break their goal-scoring drought at
the 11th time of asking. Viki Lopatnik the hero
as the Czech team broke their duck. A much improved
performance for the Lions Bar although it was
not good enough to claim the points as DHL
Prague Blue completed a 4-1 win to make
it two wins from two and sit in second place behind
league leaders East Germany.
East
Germany were then back in action against
Red Star Rickerbys
for their third game. Red Star Rickerbys can claim
one group title on their eurofootballfives.com
CV. Defeat in this game would end the chances
of that becoming two. East Germany though were
in pole position to win their first group title.
They were in an even stronger position after this
game when they edged out their opposition 2-1
thanks to a goal from Michael Chukwuma and the
goal that ultimately proved to be the winner from
Ben Craig.
The
Cheeky Boys had lost their first two games
4-2 so what price lightning striking for a third
time? Well they say things come in threes and
that's exactly what happened as DHL
Prague joined East Germany on 9 points
with a 4-2 win. The Cheeky Boys will consider
themselves unlucky as they competed well in all
three games but just fell short.
Red
Star Rickerbys kicked off their final game
in Group B knowing a win would guarantee them
a Cup Quarter-Final Place. In their way stood
Lions Bar. Lions
Bar broke their goalscoring duck in the previous
game and must have got a taste for it as Gabi
Janko and Jamie Lathwell both scored in this fixture.
Whilst they were now scoring they were still conceding.
Red Star Rickerbys finding their way through to
the Lions Bar goal on five occasions to complete
a 5-2 win and achieve a 100% record of Cup qualification.
East
Germany and DHL
Prague Blue met in the Group B clash of
the titans. Both teams boasted three wins out
of three with East Germany sitting pretty on top
of the group thanks to a superior goal difference.
They were not to relinquish that position as they
held their nerve to make it four wins out of four
thanks to goals from Paul Edwards, Scott Croucher
and Ben Craig. East Germany would enter the Cup
Quarter-Finals as Group B winners with the second
best record ever in a eurofootballfives.com 5
team group (after Northern Monkeys, 2007 Krakow
Trophy with 12 points and a goal difference of
+ 20).
All
this left just one game to complete Group B. The
Cheeky Boys and the Lions
Bar both knew they would be in the Plate
competition. This game was not a dead rubber though
as the winners would finish 4th and earn a bye
through to the Plate Semi-Final. The losers would
finish 5th and have a tricky Quarter-Final against
Atlantic Star to negotiate. The Cheeky Boys had
played well without reward so far but they got
the rewards for their performances so far emphatically
in this game as they scored a magnificent seven.
A hat-trick for Jack Walker, a brace for Rob Adams
and strikes from Dave Adams and Dave Pitman were
enough to claim all three points. The Lions Bar
had scored three in 12 games before this match.
They doubled their tally in this game with Viki
Lopatnik scoring twice and Jamie Lathwell also
scoring.
