Group
D saw defending champions Northern Monkeys embark
on their journey to become the first team to win
two eurofootballfives.com titles. Ain't Got a
Clue were the team with the unenviable task of
playing the 2007 winners in their opening game.
It was normal service resumed for the Northern
Monkeys as they completed a 5-2 victory. Alastair
Jamieson with 6 goals in 2007, rattled in a first
game hat-trick with debutant Dave Dyson and 2007
Top Goalscorer runner-up, Bill Fisher, completing
the scoring for the champions. Last year the Northern
Monkeys only conceded 3 goals in 7 games so it
was to the credit of Ain't Got A Clue's Stuart
Clark that he scored twice against the Monkeys.
The
next game in the group saw Polish team Complex
take on The Barry Moores. Complex, on home soil,
quickly got into their stride with Marek Budka
leading the way with a hat-trick. The Barry Moores,
not to be undone, troubled the scorers with strikes
from Simon Regewell and then Daniel Houghton.
Basta Mateusz scored the crucial fourth for Complex
which put the game beyond reach.
The
two first-game winners came face to face in match
3 of Group D. A significant game it was prove
to be as Northern Monkeys entered the game with
8 successive Krakow Trophy wins tasted defeat
for the first time as they were narrowly edged
out by Complex. Complex took the initiative and
scored first which meant Northern Monkeys were
constantly chasing the game and could never quite
get back into it. It was end-to-end stuff but
Complex held on for a memorable victory with a
result that reverberated around the tournament.
Northern Monkeys, by their own admission, were
not quite on song like last year. Take nothing
away from Complex though as they were good value
for the 3 points and teams would not be looking
forward to playing them in the later stages. Marek
Budka was the star of the show with his second
hat-trick in as many games and was looking like
the man to beat in the top goalscorer competition.
Pawel Sobyczk was the other goalscorer for Complex
while Jamieson, Dyson and Fisher were again on
target for the Northern Monkeys.
Aint
Got A Clue and The Barry Moores had both put in
good performances against strong opposition in
their opening games and this match was expected
to be a close run thing in keeping with the Complex
versus Northern Monkeys game before it. Aint Got
A Clue had other ideas though and turned on the
style as they secured Group D's largest win thanks
to Stuart Clark and James Wallace hat-tricks (who
gets to keep the match ball?) and a Mark Lane
goal. The Barry Moores Daniel Houghton strike
the highlight for them in a 7-1 defeat.
Going
into the final group games would it be Northern
Monkeys or Aint Got A Clue that would be joining
Complex in the Cup. Aint Got A Clue had it in
their own hands to send Northern Monkeys crashing
into the Plate. A notion that would have been
unthinkable at the start of the day.
Northern
Monkeys did their part by picking up three points
in their final game with a 4-1 victory. Daniel
Houghton, three in three games, scored for the
Barry Moores but his efforts were outgunned by
goals from Dyson, Fisher and a double from Chris
Wilson. It would all be to no avail though if
Aint Got A Clue beat Complex.
It
was a tough ask for the English side to overcome
their Polish opposition and ultimately a task
that proved too much. Despite Stuart Clark's 6
th goal of the tournament their opponents proved
too strong as Marek Budka became the first player
in eurofootballfives history to score hat-tricks
in three successive games along with another goal
from Pawel Sobcyzk. The Plate awaits Aint Got
A Clue whilst Complex have put themselves in the
mix as one of the favourites to win this tournament.
