The penalty shoot-out competition is always a lot of fun and helps break-up the tension of the main tournament. It's also a chance for players to rest the legs between the group and knock-out stages of the main competition.

It also enables the teams that have struggled in the main competition to have a chance of silverware and that is how it turned out at the Krakow Trophy in 2007 with Old Green Machine picking up the medals! See how they did it below...

Playoffs
Northern Monkeys (UK) BYE   v BYE Zeromskiego (POL)
Old Wimbledonians (UK) 3 v 2 Tips Old Boys (UK)

With 10 teams in the event, 6 automatically got a bye through to the quarter-finals with the final four having to play-off to find the final two quarter-finalists.

The first playoff saw controversy as the Northern Monkeys decided not to show for their tie against Zeromskiego citing reasons that they were concentrating on the main event. Who can argue with that as they eventually proved to be the winners of the 2007 Krakow Trophy.

In the second play-off, Old Wimbledonians maintained their momentum from the group stages of the main tournament with a 3-2 victory over Tips Old Boys.

Quarter Finals
Zeromskiego (POL) 1   v 3 Hutnik Krakow (POL)
Old Green Machine (UK) 2 v 0 Stowarzyszenie (POL)
Shock Soc (UK) BYE v BYE Radni Dzielnicy XVIII (POL)
Old Wimbledonians (UK) 5 v 4 Cobalt Silver Foxes (UK)

Zeromskiego's bye in the play-off only meant they faced the might of Hutnik Krakow who brushed them aside 3-1 with some quality goalkeeping and assured finishing.

Old Green Machine started comfortably with a 2-0 win over Stowarzyszenie with the Old Green Machine 'keeper Stephen Bailey in fine form. Form that was to continue through this penalty shoot-out tournament.

Radni, humiliated in the main event had clearly had enough as they waived their participation in the shoot-out competition - Shock Soc the beneficiaries with a bye to the Semi-Finals.

Old Wimbledonians followed up their play-off win with a thriller against Cobalt Silver Foxes. 9 converted penalties, 1 missed in sudden-death and Old Wimbledonians progress 5-4.

Semi-Finals
Hutnik Krakow (POL) 1 v 2 Old Green Machine (UK)
Old Wimbledonians (UK) 7 v 6 Shock Soc (UK)

Semi-Final 1 saw a big shock as Old Green Machine knocked out Hutnik Krakow 2-1. Hutnik Krakow shot wide of the target with their opening penalty while Old Green Machine knocked in both theirs and Hutnik Krakow notched with their second penalty. Then the deciding 3rd penalty from Hutnik - a powerful strike which Stephen Bailey flung himself at. The ball hit the 'keeper, dubbed 'Aslan' during the tournament, before rebounding on to the post and back on to the 'keeper and out. Sensational stuff and Old Green Machine are through to the final.

The second semi-final was an epic. Shock Soc against Old Wimbledonians for the second time of three in this event. An impressive display of penalties saw the shoot-out reach 3-3 and then on to sudden-death. Three more penalties each, including those by the goalkeepers, and still we were tied at 6-6. The pressure then told and Old Wimbledonians held their nerve to progress 7-6.

Final
Old Green Machine (UK) 4 v 3 Old Wimbledonians (UK)

In a competition where penalty-takers have it all to lose and the 'keepers have it all to gain it was natural that a goalkeeper emerged as the hero of the hour. That hero was Stephen Bailey of Old Green Machine as he kept Old Wimbledonians at bay whilst the strikers did their job at the other end. We won't name the unfortunate sole who missed the decisive penalty as Old Green Machine won 4-3 in sudden death.

The first silverware of the day....Old Green Machine!
