The
2009 Barcelona Fives final would be contested
between two teams on their eurofootballfives.com
debuts – West 1 Three
and Dynamo. These
two sides had met in the group stage and battled
out a 4-4 draw so the final was bound to be a
close game.
If
you were to pick a favourite you would probably
go for West 1 Three as they were only a minute
away from the Cup, had the better overall record
in Group A and had led their opponents 4-2 in
the aforementioned fixture. Dynamo though had
just picked up two successive 3-0 wins and were
growing into the tournament and just at the right
time.
The
final got underway and whilst the game was close
it was also open and we were treated to three
goals in the first half alone. It was Spanish
side Dynamo that edged it through to Gary Moore
and Jordi Serna. Osman Haider was on the scoresheet
for West 1 Three with his fourth goal of the tournament.
As
we went into the second half the next goal of
the game was crucial. Should West 1 Three score
it would be game on and extra time and penalties
would be a distinct possibility. On the other
hand if Dynamo were to score they would have one
hand on the trophy.
Dynamo
could put one hand on the trophy as they were
the team to score the fourth goal of this final
as Norberto put them 3-1 up. West 1 Three were
not to be beaten though and they kept on battling
until the end. Osman Haider scored again for them
to make it 3-2 and gave West 1 Three hope of salvaging
the game in the dying moments just as their opponents
had done to them when they met in the group. It
was not to be though and when the referee blew
the final whistle to end the game it was Dynamo
who emerged victorious. These two sides had given
us great entertainment with 13 goals in two games.
Our
congratulations to Dynamo on a fine victory in
the Plate and our commiserations to West 1 Three
who we are sure will pick up glory of their own
in future eurofootballfives.com tournaments.
On
the subject of glory, Gary Moore of Dynamo finished
as top goalscorer in the tournament with seven
goals. The first player from a team in Plate competition
to win this award – a great achievement.
