Liverpool
were back in action on Pitch A to get Round 2
underway. Both teams earned a draw in their opening
games and a second draw looked on the cards in
a tight game as the teams went in at half-time
0-0. The second half did see the deadlock broken
with the award of a penalty to Liverpool for handball
in the area. The penalty decision was described
as “dubious” by Arsenal and “definite” by Liverpool
. Who'd be a referee? David Henning stepped up
to the plate to take the penalty and put it away
with confidence to give Liverpool the lead. Unlike
their first game when they were pegged back late
on, Liverpool held on this time to collect their
visit victory and a solid opening return of 4
points from a possible 6.
On
Pitch B, Tottenham were faring better against
Ipswich Town Elite than they had against Aston
Villa. Ipswich Town Elite were looking to build
on their opening draw against Arsenal and go one
better against Tottenham but were struggling to
breakdown the Tottenham defence. Half-time came
and went with no goals and Ipswich were staring
a second successive 0-0 in the face as the final
whistle drew closer. Late on though Ipswich Town
Elite broke their scoring duck as Ollie Francis
was dispossessed for Tottenham which eventually
led to Adrian Game winning the game for Ipswich
. So close for Tottenham but sadly it was two
defeats from two for them. The result meant Ipswich
found themselves in 4 th Place .
Chelsea
and Reading saw the first Portuguese versus English
game of the day with both teams looking to build
on their opening game draws. Reading Royals came
out battling but maybe battling too hard as James
Dalley launched into a tackle just outside the
penalty area to give a free kick away in a dangerous
position. Reading were made to pay a heavy price
as Antonio Zimic fired in the free-kick from a
tight angle. In their first game Reading Royals
came from a goal behind to earn a draw against
Liverpool . Chelsea proved to be tougher opposition
though and when Andre Montinho doubled Chelsea
's lead in the second half the game was won. The
2-0 result meant that Chelsea topped the table
at the end of Round 2.
Previous
leaders Aston Villa were in action against Man
Utd and looking to repeat their first game success.
The match proved to be an extremely close and
feisty affair with both teams determined not to
lose this one. The game looked like it was heading
to a well deserved draw and a point for each team
but as the seconds were ticking away a rash challenge
in their own penalty area from an Aston Villa
player chasing back to help his defence saw the
referee rightly point to the spot. The Aston Villa
players decried the decision more in hope than
expectancy although the neutral teams watching
agreed it was a nailed on penalty. Jorge Correira
put the penalty away to score his second in as
many games and take all three points for Man Utd.
